LED headlights

Coast to Coast
I have seen a few people on here switch to the LED headlights. I missed the group buy but am interested in improving my H4 to something brighter. Does anyone have experiance, pics, testomony on any of these posted? The selections are limited, and I would like to retain a little space in the bucket for my GS450 harness necessities.

I'm using the first one on my bike. It's a little brighter than stock. The only downside is that the beam is a lot more focused than a "normal" headlight. It's almost like riding with a very bright flash light.

Weird. That would be annoying. Otherwise, are these more energy efficient and brighter, in general? I'm running an incandescent.

When I wanted to add more light to my 450XC-W (Plated and street legal) I did some searching and ended up going to ebay for two of these no-name Quad-Cree XM-L lights for $180 shipped. Advertised at 30W and 3000 lumens each.

The bike already had a headlight switch and fuse which I started by using with an 8” race light. I also wired up the switch that came with the LED lights separately so I can run them on their own or with the 8” light.

Here’s a “before“ pic with the stock light. Yes it really is that useless. Doesn't even show up 10ft from the bike. I manually set the exposure so all the pictures are taken on the same settings. The lights to the right are in my neighbor’s yard about 160ft away. The center of the road at the end of my driveway is 120ft.

Here’s the 8” 60W Halogen light, nice tight pattern. When it’s pointed down low nobody flashes their brights.

Here’s the 8” plus the 2 LED lights. The hot spot of the 8” is barely visible. I've used these for hundreds of miles of night riding an never get flashed by oncoming traffic.

The big trail tech light was heavy and obsolete once I had the LEDs so I made a mount out of some old road sign for the stock headlight housing.

Different LEDs put out light differently and have their own sets of lenses that have different output angles (spot vs flood). These are supposed to be about 25 degrees but they have a lot of spill outside the center hot spot.

There are some drop-in modular versions of similar to these that could be used to make your own light with an existing housing.

Hope this helps motivate some tinkering or sparks some ideas!!

I would want LED to lower my Amp draw. 2 x 30 watt is 60 watt. My Cb360 will not work with 60 watts of light.

A headlight with 25W or less would be a better solution and free up some wattage to keep the battery charged.

They look nice, and if I had the extra wattage, would be nice, but that just won't fly.

Nice project there LBC. Any picture with just the LED now that you moved them?
Gary

Here's what they look like in the stock headlight mask. A bit of shadow from the high fender since they are lower and further back toward the bars.

Here's what it looks like if I cover one of them. Still more than enough light for just about any situation. (except high speed in the pitch dark over unfamiliar terrain...there's never enough for that)

There are a bunch of LED dimmers made for motorcycles that use a keychain remote to adjust the brightness. Most of them us a digital controller to limit the current so no extra power is used.

Wow those are pretty bright.. Wonder how they compare with an HID HID bulb..

I was looking for something similar for my CL350 and found out a few things:

It looks like there are several LED options out there that put out HID-projector-quality lighting with less power draw and no spark spike.
