lets talk about carbs.

what, me worry?
hey gents.
well, its that time that i spread newspaper and leave carb parts all over the kitchen table for a week or two. money is a bit tight and will be since xmas and bills have been taking up most of the moneys. ive been looking at the Clymer manual for a few days and it sucks for directions on rebuilding a carb, and getting the jet right. i have just enough to pick up the carb rebuild kits, but i dont wanna start tearing these bad boys down. this is only my second set of carbs im rebuilding... so im always a bit nervous of never getting the jet right... or not setting the float to a proper level... some hints and helpful thoughts would be more than appreciated.

The best thing to do, if you are worried, is to take apart each carb apart by itself. Keep all the parts in/on it's original side. As for jetting, you need to take account of what might make you mixture different (air filter, exhaust, sometimes elevation and weather in extreme conditions, etc). Carbs will be easy if you pay attention to what parts come from where. Also, if you forget, you have the other side, which hasn't been taken apart to refer from. Jet's are pretty common for kiehn's, should be available at good local stores, and since you'll probably have to play around with the jet sizes to get it the mixture right, it would be convenient to be able to go back. while you're at it, carb cleaners also take off grime from the outside of your carbs, good start to polishing them up =]

thanks for the tip eric, last time i rebuilt the carbs was on my partial resto project was my CL450, i counted the number of turns for the jet and pilot screws and wrote them down on a piece of paper, put in the new parts and it worked out well... this will be my first time trying to jet them myself

i do the same thing with the turn counting and crap but the last set i had them out and did not write them down... it should have base start possitons in your manual as well...

if theys(ha ha)stock keihins (30mm) stick with #105 main jets to start with,,,you will not find jets from honda,,discontined!! after market jets are available, check the diaphrams for cracks, they are also available aftermarket,,,do not run 32mm mikunis on a stock motor there too big,,,best performance are from 28mm -30mm vm mikunis and are easy to jet,,,,,but you need cb 360 carb insulators(boots) to mount them, stock cv's can be rebuilt for less than $50.00.....or clean them cafefully

thanks wee. yeah they are 30mm keihins. Z1enterprises have cheap ass jets, (few bucks) but im running pod filters and aftermarket muffs. any diffrent suggestions on proper jet size?

them shiny brass tings,(jets) depend not only on the air filters, but any exhaust mods you have done as well....speak up as day say!! what mod's are you running and I can suggest some jetting parameters.........Todd,,(wee)

running pod filters, and 12" emgo shorty side slash muffs for now. no heat wrap. doesnt pop too much on downshift, but theres enough to notice. plugs have 1000 miles and are not fouled too much.

Popping is atributed to unburned fuel,, rich mixture anywhere in the carb circuits, exhaust leaks will promote this as well....1000 miles and no fouling HA keep riding and tune the carbs as you goes ;D

The link to carb re-build was OK but as usual it showed float level being set incorrectly.
Honda specify tilting carbs to 60~70 degrees from inverted position so float adjustment tab contacts but does not depress float damper valve spring.
As for main jets, you really shouldnt need anytthing bigger than 110. You will however need to lean off mid range by either adjusting needles lower otr raising float level ( which lowers fuel level in float bowl) about 1.5mm higher than stock works fine

thanks for the jet size. its going to be fun setting the float by myself. but hey, this is how you learn right?! i wish there was a youtube vid or something.

I've thought about it but dont have time or computer skills ( or video camera, my coolpix only does 30 sec of video)
I do have apic somewhere showing angle of carb for setting floa height, I'll see if I can find it.

yeah good deal, im wondering in my mind how to hold this thing LOL
