first bike. CB125 1973

planning a tune up, making it run super smooth and drive it stock for a little bit.
Figured i would start with the simplest bike I could find, take it apart and learn from it.

closeup of the hole.

Should I bother getting this fixed or finding a new one would be cheaper?

any lead on where I could get this fixed in Toronto?

I've got one of those too. Use it to get around the racetrack when I'm working. Love those little things.

So I have heard that these small cb's don't like pod filter very much but I doubt it is usually that bad. it wasnt working fantasticly to begin with but now that I changed the filter, things seems to be worse. bike needs gas constantly otherwise it will just die in seconds.
(see video below)

also, not sure if this problem is linked the the other but once in a while when I give gas, the engine will rev up to 6-7K and get stuck there for a few seconds before settling down to 1-2K.

please help

and this is where I was before the pod filter. slowly lightening it. bought shocks today to raise the rear by a few inches.

Re: CB125 1973 facelift - Toronto

Hi, nice little bike you've got there, I have a '73 CB125 too. They make great cafe's if you ever plan on doing a full on build. You're right about them not liking pods, at least that's my experience with one. If you haven't already done so you will need to re-jet the carb. I went down from a 98 main with the airbox to an 85 with a pod. As for the revving to 6-7K issue, try lowering the needle clip one notch (raising the needle). When I was re-jetting my carb for a pod, I raised the needle clip thinking it might need leaning out a bit more, and had the same problem of erratic revving.

The racing idle is often caused by carbs out of sync and/or an air leak in the intake boots between the carbs and engine.

Switching to pods from a stock airbox is always a challenge. But before you dig into the carbs a whole lot, you need to make sure the timing and valves are adjusted to spec. Fresh plugs too.

Where in Toronto are you? What shop did you work with on the safety, and did you get it?

Hoping to do the safety in the next few days. Just need some new tires which I am getting from FS this week.

I was hoping to stop by cyclewerx tomorrow to see if they can help with my carb & people have been recommending me Ted @ rosey toes for the safety. suggestions welcome though.

kinda frustrated at the moment to not be able to ride because of (what I am assuming) a simple carb problem but I also don't want to have someone else do everything for me and not learn from it. :/

Ted's good for the safety, and Tom at Cyclewerx is a great guy (tell him you're on DO THE TON and you know Tim - he'll probably charge you more ;)).

If the bike ran better with the airbox put it back on at least till you get everything else sorted and enjoy some time on the road.

Changed the filter on mine too and it was a pain in the ass! It certainly is a carb problem because mine is a 2012 Honda CGL (bought it new, I'm from Mexico). It ran like new (duh!) and with the filter ran like crap!
The problem is that somehow, instead of letting more air in, the filter lets less air so theres too much fuel in the mix causing it to be very rich. (check your spark plug just to be sure)
I have asked and asked and the stock airbox has a rubber hose which connects to the carb that probably works as a velocity stack.
What I did on mine was to add a car radiator hose to the carb and on the other end the high flow filter; you can check the pics on my thread!
It runs very very well with that mod and I didn`t need to change anything else.
Also, try messing around with the needle or jets! (Try a smaller main for example) In order to run the filter directly.
Cheers from Mexico!
Nice build!

125 power for the win! jaja

I have 2 rectifiers and the size difference is pretty considerable. Same bike model, different year. Wondering if one of them isnt original or they just made them bigger from '73 to '74? which one should I use or does it even matter?

If I'm not mistaken, the orange/red one is an older/original part and the one on the right is newer/aftermarket part.

would make sense since that black framing is the original casing. thank you!just wanted to make sure they were both the same thing

Started painting my side cover black. still need to clear coat.
Followed tWistedWheelz very useful thread : http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=10993.0

many thin coats, sanding between each coats. metallic paint is a bit more forgiving than matte, especially when rattle canning.

heres a few snaps from the step by step:
