Responded to an ad on Craigslist on Tuesday, told the guy i was super interested and he held the bike for me til today!
Anyways, its a 1972 Yamaha RD350, or R5. Bike is SUPER clean. Zero rust in the tank, even tho it has 2 small dents. Seat has a few small rips. Wheels are super clean. Motor makes good compression, but it seems that either the throttle cable is sticking or the carbs are just REALLY gummed up. I cant turn the throttle past like 1/8 of a turn. Anyway, i plan on just getting it running, changing out the turn signals, some lower bars, a barend mirror and some new tires. Im obviously guna change the trans oil and lube all the other cables, adjust brakes etc.

Thanks for looking! I appreciate any info/tips/tricks for this ol girl too.

Thanks guys! The guy was nice enough to hold the bike for me since Tuesday...he even got 3 calls about the bike while i was at his house.
First order of business tomorrow is pulling the carbs and giving them a thorough cleaning, put some fresh fuel and oil in the ol' girl and hope for the best.
Does anyone know if the oil pumps are reliable in these? Or should i premix it and just forget about the oil pump?

Bite the bullit and replace the outter crank seals or this could happen

I guess the outer crank seals are a common problem? The bike hasnt been registered since '84 so i need to go through it and make sure all is well.
Dont worry, im guna leave the paint as is...it has a GREAT patina as it sits. Im just guna trade the HUGE turn signals for something a little cleaner looking and a barend mirror (i might have one in stock).
I found a set of DG pipes for 300 bux...good investment? Obviously im guna wait on the pipes until the bike is checked over safety wise.
What else do i need to look out for BradJ?

Aren't the R5's the piston port predecessor to the RD reed valve line? Beautiful bike BTW.

Yea its a Piston Port motor. In 73 yamaha switched to reed valves. Oh and thanks for all the kind words!

Brad is right that the crank seals MUST be replaced. Fortunately they are cheap and available - or were last time I checked.

So i pulled the carbs this morning and douched em out with some carb cleaner. The inside of the carbs looked like they had marvel mystery oil in them, and they were pretty clean. The dude who had this before me musta really cared about it! Put the carbs back on, checked the oil level, put in some fresh gas and kicked it over. At first it was only firing on the left cylinder, so i tickled the points and then it finally fired on both. It ran good for a minute or so, then backfired. The right side plug was SOAKED in fuel.
Im ordering up some carb kits, points, condenser and new plugs tonite along with a new battery...oh yea, and crank seals. I'd hate to blow the ol girl up before i get a chance to ride it!
Thats all for today, and a few pics to keep yall in the loop. My dog seems to like it and check out how clean the tank is!!!!!

Nice score!
About the injector pump... They are rebuildable, and I know people that swear by them. But I ended up going the premix route. Because I know that "If it's running, it's getting oil". However, running premix will limit how far you can go at a time. Unless you want to carry oil with you, mix in the tank when you fuel up, and hope the ratio is right.

Lotsa good people/info over there ;)

Great find on the R5!
You are gonna love that bike. I'm keeping my oil pump, it works and you don't really have to think about it. I just check the level when I check the rest of my fluids/tire pressure etc.

Great find Tedd. Unless you're racing the bike, keep the pump. It works fine for a stock motor that's well taken care of.

Yea it seemed when I ran it he other day that he pump was working...I mean it was smoking. That's a good sign lol!
Plans are to keep it stock for now. I don't know what might happen a few years down the road though lol!
Parts should be here in a few days. I'm guna do he crank seals and a bunch a maintenance work before I hit the road.
Thanks for looking. I'll keep y'all updated fo sho.

Just a quick update. I replaced the crank seals and gave it new plugs and points. Whoever had this before me must have fogged the motor before he put it away, because it smoked BAD for about 3 minutes. Went to take it for a ride and of course the clutch wouldnt disengage. So i just pushed it and dropped it in first and took off. The clutch freed up after trip up the block and back. Once she was warmed up it ran GREAT! Happy that its running well. Now i gotta find the paper work and attempt going to DMV to get the ol girl registered. Im sure there will be a solid 30 years of bugs to work out of it.
