So i just picked up a 1978 Kawasaki KZ650 SR from a buddy for only $300, only problem is he lost the keys about 2 years ago. so now i cant open up under the seat to get at the battery or actually just remove the seat, cant open the gas tank either. So since im a n00b i thought i'd ask you guys? I figured i'd just drill it out, bad idea? Just tell me what you guys think, and thanks in advance.

I have a lock pick set but obviously you are there and I am here........

I would get a locksmith that knows what he is doing. There is a way to make a carbon etching on a key that is of the same keyway and then file each cut on the key til it is made.

Yea i thought about a locksmith, only problems are 1)not tryin to spend a bunch of money and 2) looks like someone already took a hammer and pick to it, so i dont know if that would work if the lock has been tampered with. So it looks like I'm gonna be drilling it out, I'll still wait a bit and see if anyone has some wonder trick but i figure thats what im gonna have to do. I know for a fact the gas tank used to open with any screwdriver/knife/pick but now it just spins and spins so im guessing thats shot, considering it has bad gas in it and i was already considering changing it out I'm not particularly worried about the tank, just the lock under the seat.

That lock under the seat should be replaceable? I would drill it all out as well from what it sounds like.

Try using a small, thin key. I ran into this problem when I bought my CB750. I ended up using my key for my locker at work, and yes it works.

I believe it is replaceable although i haven't looked because i plan on switching to a single seat and battery box set up so i wouldnt even need to have it lock anymore, i think the consensus is in, looks like tomorrow night im drilling it. Thanks guys, i'll let you now how it goes.

I would pull the ignition switch out and see if there is a key code stamped into it. If there is you can just call a Kaw dealership and see if they can make you a new key

+1 w/Lingo. If you can get an ignition key made, it'll fit everything else.
Also, a locksmith probably wont be as bad as you think. I had no key for the tank I picked up for my DS7. Brought it to a local locksmith. 10 minutes and $10 bucks later I had it open and two keys made for it ;)

check eBay your ignition and seat lock has a number on it look for the right key code. I ordered a set on eBay for like 3 bucks

Well guys the gas cap luckily open with my padlock keys, so that's all good. The lock under the seat I hit with the drill and even though it was a bitch I funnily got the whole lock cylinder out. Which is fin cause I'll be grinding the whole tab there off anyways. Thanks for your input guys. Cheers
