Lowering GS650 Front End - Air Assist Needs to Go

My stock '83 GS650G front forks allow for air pressure to assist the stock springs. I'm replacing the springs with a set of Sonic Springs which no longer need air pressure in the forks. This is good, because I will be sliding the fork tubes up in the trees to lower the front end a bit, and this will cause the stock air seals to have to be removed.

My question is, how should I seal up the fork tubes? Should I just weld the small air port in the tube shut and grind it smooth? It will be covered by the top triple clamp.

If it is a pipe thread I would seal it with a hex head pipe plug.

No, it's just a small tapered hole just below the top triple clamp. I'll just give the tack weld a shot.
