My 9 year old Dobe "Arwen" was diagnosed with Cancer 6 weeks ago. :'(

Devastation .................... however with the efforts of a superb vet here she is 3 weeks ago - 1 week after the operation to remove a lump the size of a half pounder burger !

Prognosis [ for this proceedure ] is good, although there was a small problem with some of the [ 30 ! ] stitches due to dying skin. ::)

Final proceedure Thursday to put some strengthening stitches around the the skin over the joint.

We're having to monitor her every minute during the day while she is recovering, and our summer trip to Saxony might be in doubt [ 10 days time ] unless the wound is 100% recovered.

Shaved animals are always hilarious. Here's to quick healing.

Here's my best wishes to you and your faithful companion for a speedy recovery.

Beautiful girl! Hope she heals well. 8)

I always liked the female dobis better, they seemed to me to have a special something. ;)

My last dog went through three bouts of cancer and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Dogs are very tough creatures though, mine got cancer when he was three and he lasted another 5 1/2 years until it caught up with him. Enjoy every minute you have with her, I hope she heals quickly. Let us know how she makes out.

Wow ...................... I am grateful for all your good wishes - all passed on to Arwen !!

I am amazed at how quickly animals bounce back from major surgery / incidents.

She has suffered numerous cut [ badly ] paws and pads courtesy of the idiots who throw beer bottle into the woods and fields.

She had to have a discarded fishing hook removed from her nose [!]

Two years ago she went in for a minor procedure to remove a lump from her ear - and during the pre- aneasthetic - the vet discovered there was a problem [ critical ] with her womb which had NO outward signs and she had to have an emergency hysterectamy on the spot ! The next day would have been too late.

BTW - the "Victorian" collar gets put on at night when we can't monitor her [ as in EVERY minute of the day ! ]

Arwen and my family thank you all sincerely.

Arwen in one of her favourite places - the lake just outside our house in the UK

Rusty is sad she's not feeling well...

He said "Woof woofwoof". Which is either "Get well soon Arwen" or "I'm hungry". It's kinda hard to tell with him ::)

Hope she has a speedy recovery Beach ;)

Arwen says thanx to Rusty ....... she is also hungry ! Here she is with the "guaranteed 7 day chew bone" - whiich lasted almost 3 !

Our trip to Saxony is now definitely off - she has the skin cut back now to "good strong skin" for new stitching [ sutures ]. I nearly passed out when I saw it for the first time yesterday prior to the first of THREE procedures. There is a hole approx the size of a TR1 piston crown [ 95mm - 4" ] of missing skin and you can see all the workings of the leg on view - like a horror story. Arwen was not bothered in the slightest - and has just undergone the first op with 30mm [ approx 1/3rd ] of the wound closed up.

Unfortunately it is right across where the top "shoulder" joint articulates, and is impossible to stop the strain - that's why the vet has chosen to do the repairs little by little. That will be at least 3-4 weeks, and we were due to fly out to Reichenau this Friday morning - Ah well - family is more important than holiday breaks.

Sitrep ................. the vet has now virtually given up with the stitches [ sutures] until we get good healthy strong skin.

The hole has closed a little [ now "only" 70mm ] by what they call "second intention" .... basically that's let it heal itself !!!

Dressings now have to be renewed twice daily - hence the "Brisket of Doberman" jacket so I can change the Aloe Vera pads myself - vet visits every 3 days for check ups.

Being of an engineering persuasion, I'm thinking - tie wraps, stainless steel strips with a toggle [ like Manx tank ! ] all sorts that would hold the wound together without using stitches. Sort of a biomechanical answer.

Whatever - looks like I've got at least THREE months to come up with a solution - that means the Oktoberfest in Reichenau is also out this year.

On the bright side, TJ, your dog looks simply stunning in lace.

I have three dogs and they all hang out in my shop with me ! I don't know what I would do with out them ! BC we wish the best to you and your best friend and hope for a speed recovery sir !!

+1
German girls are usually too... uh... sturdy for lace, but she's svelte enough to pull it off ;)

The last time Rusty was under a Vet's care he had heartworms. I remember getting the "repair estimate" and saying "Holy Crap! I'm not sure I like him that much!"
Of course I was kidding ;) But I imagine a relatively "minor" situation like that would be cheap by comparison to what Arwen is going through. I'd like to toss ya a few bucks for the cause BC. PM me an address where I can send it ;)

Good luck to you and yours sir!! Ill pull some pics Fart was a fixture on the local Cali amature Motocross scene in the late 90s :D
