Motorcycle USB Phone Charger

OK ladies and gents,

I've just completed my first prototype and I'm ready to sell a few of these bad boys:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuvFlZIg1Sw

This is basically a unit that you can wire into your existing harness that allows you to plug your phone in and charge it. At the moment, this is only for 12V motorcycle systems, but I'm thinking about doing a 6V system as well, if there is enough interest.

The width and depth of the unit is about the same as a deck of playing cards, but it's about 50% longer. The case is made from aluminum so it remains nice and sturdy and the unit is water resistant (though not entirely water proof, so go easy on it).

Price for these things is $20 and includes the cost of shipping within the US. Foreign buyers, please add $5. I'm building these to order, so please allow a week or so to make them and another few days for shipping times.

Optional extras:
*Mounting bolts - $2
*Grounded case - $1 (normally ground will be handed through the green wire, as shown in the pics)
*Digital LED Voltmeter - $10 (displays the voltage currently running through your bike and it built into the side of the case)
*Expedited Order - $5 (I'll skip a few hours or sleep to get yours done ASAP make your order and ship it out priority mail instead of first class)

If you have any special requests or requirements, please let me know and I'll do my best to accommodate them.

Thanks for looking,
Matt

What are the output specs on the USB port? How many amps? My nutty Galaxy Note II has a 2A charger.

Yea my htc has the same issue 2a or nada . Tim we may have him retro fitting a different ic to do our high current heavy lifting ...

I use one of these but it's normal operation is 0.5a and with modification it's only 1.0a http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-Dual-Charger-iPhone-Players/dp/B000RYSU7O

This one is also limited to 1a http://www.kensington.com/kensington/us/us/p/1416/K39242US/usb-car-charger.aspx

This one claims to be 2.0a across 4 USB ports which sounds like they may individually be limited to 0.5a http://www.kensington.com/kensington/us/us/p/1416/K39242US/usb-car-charger.aspx though it says that it it's connected to an iPad, nothing else can be connected so maybe that's not an issue.

There are a bunch on ebay for the same sort of price, but not in a suitable package and that's an issue.

At $20 Matt's doesn't sound too bad at all.

My current design can handle up to an amp at 5V.

Gimme a couple of days to work out a circuit for 2A. I can probably do it if I use a switching regulator instead of a linear one.

I don't know much about electrical, but I do know I absolutely always have my Iphone on me.... and if I could have a charger built into my bike I am very interested. I will be watching this closely and as soon as I get my bike electrically sound Ill be hitting you up for one of these bad boys. Do I need to have a 12v battery on my cb450? stock charging system, was looking at a 4cell lithium, but if I will need a bigger battery to support this charger, I would rather sacrifice battery size in order to run this on my bike.

Battery size doesn't matter, battery voltage is the only concern and the 450 is definitely 12V.

Consider me interested. Being able to have a constantly charging phone while I use GPS would be great!

Hey Matt I know I said I wanted one on the Rockers fb page, but I'm trading in the current bike, for what I don't know yet. I'll reassess my need when I know what I'm getting.

Why not use a battery tender cigarette lighter adapter with a usb plug. Then you can use it for other things also, like a tire pump. This is what I use.

Battery tender plug is permanently hooked up to my battery, and when the battery tender isn't plugged in, the cigarette lighters adapter with USB plug is.

Dime City might've beat ya to it. They have something similar listed on their site for sale, already.

I see questions like this all the time on the forum. Power to run accessories does not come from the battery. The battery does not generate power. Power comes from the bike's charging system, and it is the charging system's capacity that determines what accessories and lighting you can run.

That is a slight oversimplification but essentially true. The only time the bike's systems draws power from the battery is during circumstances of reduced output from the charging system. That tends to happen in traffic when the bike is idling or running at low RPM.

You should modify one of the Qi wireless chargers to something say on the triple or just at the top of the tank near the triples. That way all you have to do is put your phone in a holder of some sort and voila. Also, the screen would be facing up so you could have navigation if need be or a gps app for velocity numbers(speed, g's, altitude, heading, etc.) that would be interesting. Like a modified belt clip that has charging wireless.

Curious here too

Kinda what I did on my Yamaha. I have an Otterbox, and made a bracket so that the beltclip would slide onto it, positively retaining it. Allowed me to use my gps speedo app and navigation stuff. Will be doing the same with the new bike.
