Mounting rear disc and caliper

Is it worthwhile or reasonable to mount a disc up to the rear of my '80 CB400T and then manufacture a bracket to mount a caliper and run the hydraulics to a rearset and reservoir already set up for it. Would this be a significant gain in stopping power or just a cool one-off addition??
 
More of a cool addition in my humble opinion, I have a drum on the rear of my CB550 and it works fine for how much it is needed and used.
 
I use mine equally and prefer the rear brake over the front anyhow. Going to relocate the rearset so its easier to stretch out my legs and thought about doing this at the same time.
 
No small feat by any means. A good bit of precision fab work will be required. In my opinion, its not needed, but if you want to its your dime brother.
 
Have formal welding training and some ability otherwise I wouldn't be considering it. Figured it I got the brake components from another bike and made the brackets it wouldn't be too terribly difficult.
 
You could try a mechanical disc brake from a cb200. While mounting a disc brake to a rear wheel may be "easy", the rear hub may be tougher to do. If you want a spoked wheel in the rear, the sprocket and the rotor need to be mounted to the hub. Just food for thought.
 
Not modifying a front wheel. Got the Com Star's front and back and took a look at the hub and it has the rubber boots for vibrations in the drum side. was thinking of getting a round disc with studs on the back and hole drilled and tapped in the face to bolt the rotor to. This "disc" with the studs would then be either welded or glued into the hub. There's plenty of room with the axle spacer.
 
Well to me it seems you have thought it out and you sound as though you have the skills needed to do it.

I say go for it, it will be a worthwhile modification which will cost you a bit of time only.
 
dont know if this helps but i did some looking around and found out what other wheels from diff bikes ( same make) would fit my bike . 75 xs500 is what im building and i put 77 RD400 mags on it. went from drum to brake on the rear with lil more then a few ebay trips for parts only thing was a lil tab for the reserve that needed to be tak on. and i was told you can swap with some other brands just liked the RDs.

Not meaning to be rude but rather than modifying your bike you reallly should be modifying your braking style.
