New member to this forum but been around others in the UK for a while. Just started on my latest project which is a '79 MZ TS250. The bike itself was in very good condition for its age but a few bits were tired and when i priced up replacements it didnt seem economically viable to do a full restore so thought i would do what i like doing most and make the bike individual
Have started stripping it down and already ordered a new seat unit, some second hand rear sets and a filter to replace the HUGE air box. Need to figure something with the exhaust but could be fun seeing that its a 2 stroke. I have a set of clip ons from a previous project so they will probably get put on and then its a case of figuring out the paint scheme. I need to get polishing on the wheels as the alloy has tarnished and also on the engine but should come up ok. Will also need to figure out the fitting and operation of the rear sets when they turn up due to the operation of the rear brake, may even need to change to a cable operated rear but will see.
Anyway, enough words so here are some pics of the bike when i got it. I will get some more this weekend when i start mocking things up a little. Any comments welcome of course.

I'll be watching your build, these bikes are seriously underated. There are lots of racing bits available too.

Cheers Erskine, have been reading all through your build as well and like it a lot! reminds me a little of my KE100. Have been having a good read through the racing sites and got the tuning guides so hopefully i can make this a good bike.
Well the seat turned up today so started trimming it in my lunch hour. Got a lot more to do yet to get it sitting right but its a start and i have been able to get the battery inside the tail hump so will tidy things up a bit. May cut down the lower tail a little but depends what i decide to do with regards the mudguard. Just waiting on the rearsets to turn up so i can start setting the whole thing up properly. Also need to figure the exhaust as i want to replace it with something more fitting and shorter but need to investigate more being its a 2 stroke and all. Anyway, pics....

Gotta love these MZ's even though they are so f'ugly. They're so well made, I mean who else was fitting alloy rims as standard in the 70's? They were built to be rebuildable and last a true life time. Back in the day my mate had one as new and said it would out handle its Japanese contemporaries.
I have a MZ tacho on my build which I shall be swapping if you need one. Where are you in Blighty?
Cheers for the offer. im just outside southampton. Only problem would be working out where to mount it. The speedo is built into the headlamp on this one. They certainly are built well and suprising light to thanks to all the aluminium they used. Have still managed to shave a fair bit off though i reckon.
On the plus side i have just ordered a sports exhaust for the old girl from germany! brand new for the princely sum of £35 . Found someone else on Britchopper mad enough to do a similar project and he gave me a heads up. Must say though i think his will look a little nicer when its done but i am still learning.
Cheers guys, made a little more progress this weekend but not much. Got the seat trimmed down to shape a little more and bolted down. Not sure if i should trim the back a little more yet to bring it up higher or leave the tail curving down. Thinking of going side number plate so dont need it for putting the plate on.
Also got a sports exhaust ordered from germany for her to replace the HUGE one the bike came with. Need to get the clip ons fitted and new headlight brackets too so hoping the weather holds out tonight.
Well the new exhaust has just turned up so will hopefully get that bolted on tonight
also got someone coming round to possibly buy my old KE100 which will mean a few pennies for parts on this project. Been in touch with a company called Burwins who made parts for the MZ racing series and will hopefully be ordering some rear sets from them as im struggling a little with building my own and by the time i have done some trial and error to sort it buying their kit will work out cheaper. Happy days!
Well it was a little like christmas in the BBSparky household today. Mr Postman brought me lots of nice goodies for the little MZ.
Got the new seat unit which i think looks a lot better than the old one i tried. So i have shortened the rear of the frame to suit.
Also got a piece of chequer plate to make my undertray to hold all the wiring and allow me to tidy up the lines of the bike.
And finally my battery replacement which should save me both weight and space.
Hoping a set of clubmans will be here soon too and waiting on delivery of a complete racing rear set setup from Burwins then project can carry on again!
Well I got the rear sets fitted this weekend. They clamp onto the frame rather than weld on due to regulations for the race series but seem sturdy enough. Got my angle grinder back from the old man too so will be removing unnecessary brackets and rear footpeg mounts this week. Also ordered a side side so i can remove the large and heavy center stand.
Small update. Bike is now all stripped down, unnecessary brackets removed and frame and cardboard pattern has been sent off to have a custom under seat tray made to hold all the wiring. Then it will be on for powder coat. Idea of the tray is it will follow the underside of the frame rails, up the back of the frame which will allow a strip for my lights then off at about a 45 angle to follow the back of the seat. Plan is for 7 led's across the back of the frame ( 3 for tail and 4 for brake ). Indicators will be flush mounted in the tray under the seat hump and white led's will down light the number plate. Will mean that the lines of the bike should stay very clean and uncluttered.
Also got a small battery which will fit easily in the tail.
Will get the frame back when i get back from my hols in a couple of weeks time so will get some pics then. In the mean time i have to try and clean up the engine and all the other ally bits, pick a colour for the tank and light and find someone to trim the seat. hmmmm busy busy
