My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion (FINISHED)

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Nice Kawi, i just stumbled on this for the first time. Its good to see im not all alone in bellingham.

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Thanks! I was actually just thinking about updating this thread... my seats almost ready for paint (once it warms up) and then find a way to mount some pegs and she'll be ready to roll! Where in Bellingham are you?

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Top of Yew St. Hopefully my bike will be up and running by the end of april. I just started paint as well.

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Nice! I'm off Sunset and Cornwall. Is the Honder your only bike? Anything else in the stable to go for a little ride sometime? You've probably seen me around town, I'm the goof with the bright orange helmet, usually with a white Teknic jacket on a white DR350. I ride every day, rain, shine or snow, so you've probably seen me (hopefully at least, that's what the orange helmet is for :) )

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

WOW! Love this bike! Dont know how Ive missed this thread for so long. Not sure if its been thought of, but now that youre motor bits have been blasted, you should really lay a coat of high temp clear coat on them to stave off oxidation.

Yeah the 360 is my only ride for now. Ive got an SL350, CB160 and 750 in storage but first things first. Ill look for the orange helmet. Let me know if your into some rides this summer.

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

I'm always into some rides, however I should be at a lot of the boat races which will suck up most of my weekends. I am however planning on doing a California/Utah trip for MotoGP at Laguna and then heading over for the Salt Flat days.

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Well, I finally got a bit more work done yesterday. I was hoping these pegs would fit right out of the box (yeah right) but that was not so. I had to do a little tweaking. Cut the rubber off of the stock pegs, cut the pegs down to length so I could use the part that mounts to the bike, weld on a (modified) m12x1.25x25 bolt, paint and install. Paint should be dry by now so we'll go see how they fit!

Now I have to figure out what to do with the seat... it looks great from the side, but I can't stand the look from behind or above :(

Sorry for the phone pictures.

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

That bike (stock) looks very similar to my '73 G5. First bike I ever had and rode. I pushed my parents mower all over town to buy that thing. I've thought many times about doing something like what you've done to it, but I always end up just leavin' it alone. Too much nostalgic value. Now I can just live vicariously through you. Thanks!

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Looking good!
Are you going to run a rear mudguard on it?

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Well I ended up buying a used gas tank of ebay to hack up and make a tail out of. I just don't like what I had done so far with that iteration. I may weld a bit of a fender on there right at the back, but otherwise I don't plan on having a rear fender.

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

That single rear seat stay looks too cool to distract it with a full guard.
It's such an unusual design. :)

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Although the seat/tank works it often looks bulbous from the back on the smaller bikes. I ran one with a tank from my sl350 last year and could never come to tearms with it. I ended up with a seat from glass from the past.

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Yeah, but for $50 I figured I'd try. I'm thinking about cutting it lengthwise and doing a teardrop kinda thing to make it look a bit "smaller"... we'll see I suppose.

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

looking really good, love the color, tank and decal. I'm currently building a 67 c2tr120 the one in my avatar so I'm very interested in your project.

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Good idea about cutting it down the center, that could look really good. Got any shots from the back?

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Think I got a seat sorted out... something that I actually like. Although with no shielding gas and very little welding experience, it sure took a while.

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

That seat looks amazing! I'm trying to do something similar but I didn't think to use a gas tank, it already has all the curves. The welds look great as well, you use a mig?

Re: My '72 Kawi G3SS rebuild/conversion

Thanks! Yes, I'm using a mig, but I don't have a bottle so it's dirty welding. The welds really aren't very good, but they'll do just fine. Making a tail out of a tank is much faster than making a tail from glass I've found!
