My '78 CX500 Cafe Racer Project

Sorry to bring this up and be slightly OT - Do the 5-0 give you or your missus any headaches regarding the offset license plate on the bobber?
I'm in Victoria too, looking to undergo a cafe project, but was wondering how closely that's scrutinized...

Hey Sebaton, yeah...I've had this question asked a couple of times and my best answer is.....no. I haven't had any troubles (as yet) and I believe that I've followed the regulations (at least to my knowledge and what I could find out at the time) about the positioning of the rear Stop/Tail light. All I could find at the time was information regarding how high it had to sit from the road and I'm pretty sure mine is within the limits. Don't quote me, but I seem to remember when researching 'modifying a Motorcycle', something about being no less than about a height of 30cm approx. from the road, but it didn't state whether it needed to be positioned dead centre, to the left or to the right of the rear. So going by this information I went ahead with the mods, although a variation on the side mount plate is the 'Vertical' look, I would seriously doubt that this would be legal due to the fact it can't be read as easily. So if you do try to keep in 'Horizontal' the way I've mounted mine and make sure it's illuminated.

But that's about as much info as I can give and as I said, it's just what I've found out so don't take it as the definitive answer. I've heard a few people suggest they 'thought' it was illegal but know one has shown me evidence as yet.

Good luck with the mods.

thanks mate - i'm guessing people here will tend towards paranoia since our police tend to be overzealous with 2 wheelers...

ROne - I'm trawling through vicroads documentation now and found something that may be of interest in this: http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/2F4D64FE-B1A5-48D1-B848-19CD5F8176D7/0/VSI4.pdf
Namely:
"...Where only one lamp of a type or kind is fitted it must be mounted centrally."

But then, changing pretty much anything (suspension, brakes, frame) requires an Approval Certificate.
Pretty painful, hey?

Yes, that's the same reference I used when checking up the situation originally and I must say....I feel it's not as 'clear cut' as it seems. I particularly paid attention to the sections referencing 'Brake Light / Red Rear Lamp / Number Plate Lamp' and it doesn't reference anything about positioning so I'm going with that theory ;) But hey, that's just me. I like taking risks.... ;D

But thanks for the interest.
