Hello all! I've been lurking here for some time now, and thought it was about time to share my build. I acquired a 1984 BMW R65 from a co-worker who kept it immaculate. It was fairly OEM, with saddlebags et al....
I removed a lot of the fat, bolted on some clip ons, and did some other little things here and there. I'll define more of the details of the project later, but I just wanted to introduce myself and post a picture or two today.

What did you do about the engine blow-off valve? Slap a breather filter on it? Also, did you have to re-jet your carbs because of the short intake track?
I haven't done anything with crankcase vent (I saw on another build where it emptied into a small aluminum catch box, might go that route). As far as the carbs, the previous owner had the cone filters on it and the airbox. No idea if the the carbs were re-jetted. Guess I should take a look at the jet #'s...
Just finishing up wiring the Acewell into the headlight bucket. I got lucky with the plastic bezel, while looking online I found an extruder company that did mass quantities of office furniture computer grommets, the kind you find on your desk that lets you feed those computer wires through the desk in a nice, neat manner. The bezel that trimmed off that grommet looked PERFECT online, so I moved some papers around, popped the one off my desk and wouldnt ya know it, it fit the Acewell PERFECTLY! After expanding the instrument hole on the bucket to fit the new bezel, and building an internal bracket to secure the Acewell from inside the bucket, I was in business. Here it is!
I just have to bondo the bucket around the bezel to finish it off, then off to paint. I think I got lucky on that one
Thanks! Those particular shocks were on there when I acquired the bike, but I dont think the shocks are that much different over stock. I did increase the preload somewhat because I tote my wife around (she's a buck twenty and I'm a whopping 220lbs), so perhaps when the bike is unloaded it appears higher.
In response to an email about what clipons I'm using:
I'm running the Tarozzi low rise clipons. I liked them because they mount low, but increase the height of the bar about 1.5". When you go this route, I would highly recommend you take the top clamp of the triple to a machine shop to shave off the cast aluminum ears that support the stock handlebars. It presents a much cleaner, sleek look that goes well with the clip ons.
Yea those old snowflake rims are a bit dank. They needs some attention, but what kind of attention? I saw on another thread where someone painted them black and they turned out ok. I was thinking something similar, with pin striping to match the tank. There is something attractive about driving an all black, murdered out R65 that I like.
Really diggin this build! The Acewell in the headlight looks seamless...great job!
My dad has an r100 and i dream of modding it one day, if i can pry it from his fingers lol!
I was looking at buying one of those from a dealership, it had over 120000kms on it and they were asking $3500. I politely told them I would offer $2k max, then they told me to leave their shop...
