My shits leaking

So the three dark oil spots are what has leaked out in the past 3-4 days.

Its coming out of the bottom of the left crank case cover. I'm guessing that gasket needs to be replaced.

This is the problem. All these junky philips head bolts strip out if you look at them too hard.

So i'm thinking find a gasket and get some new allen head bolts for it, but i'm nervous about drilling out the old bolts. Has anybody here had to do this? What's the best plan of attack? Should i just not worry about it? its not leaking much.

Drilling them out shouldn't be a big issue. Once the head of the screw is drilled off and the cover comes off you chould be able to get some pliers or vice grips on the threaded part of the bolt and it will turn right out. At least the few I've done were like that. Without the pressure from the head of the screw they become almost finger loose. Godd luck!

As far as those bolts go I'd avoid drilling and use that only as a last resort. I usually put a big fat philips in and hit the handle with a hammer really hard, then put a rubber band between the screw driver and the bolt and keep a ton of pressure on when turning, those combined usually do the trick.

If possible pliers or a vice grip may work after hitting it with a hammer, they don't usually work on the cases though, the bolts are too rounded.

(a) That's hardly any oil!

(b) In order to remove the sidecover you will need either a JIS screwdriver (those aren't Philips head screws, they're Japanese Industrial Standard) and/or an impact screwdriver (if you're going to buy one of these two tools, buy the latter).

Would you recommend not worrying about it? I just noticed it leaking 3 or 4 days ago. The bike runs just fine.

I dont really have much experience with working on motors so if its not a big deal id just rather leave it alone. unless it gets worse i guess.

I can barely walk across my garage floor, there's so much oil on it, and I only leave my bike on newly-paved asphalt so as not to leave any new spots. Probably best you get a second opinion :)

Seriously though - up to you. That is a minor oil leak, presuming that it isn't leaking more because you are out of oil already.

I'm with Rick on this one. Don't drill the screws as a first resort. And don't pound on the cases with anything unless it's an impact driver. Use the right tool for the job.

As for oil, that's not a big leak, but fix it anyway. Otherwise you'll get used to seeing it and one of these days you won't keep enough oil in the engine and you'll break stuff. Ask me how I know...

If it didnt leak when it was new, it shouldn't be leaking now... If it is leaking, than fix it.

Where can I get that gasket? I saw that Dime city sells a full gasket kit, think they'd just sell me the one if I call them? other sources?

Another for impact driver.

And I'll second on the leave-it-alone. Some of my bikes are sealed tight, some not so much, but a couple drips doesn't usually bug me until it becomes more than a couple drips (or gets my socks dirty).

Call your local Honda dealer. Last I checked (a few years back), the gaskets were still available individually from the factory. That said, you can get a whole kit from EBay for under $50. If it were me, I'd go that route and replace ALL of the easily done ones on a rainy afternoon sometime. Cheap insurance.

got the advice of my engine knowledgable father in law. his advice was to just leave it be until i have any real trouble out of it then he said we'd just rebuild the whole thing. i guess he has everything we need including a cylinder hone. Sounds like a plan to me.

Just use some liquid gasket like Threebond. 20 minute job. No sense in leaving it to leak.
