my tank and seat so far

Picked up a xs750 tank off ebay for my yamaha maxim 400 cafe racer project. Understandably, I had to do some modification to the tank and frame to get it to fit/mount, but it was all pretty simple. I'm not entirely happy with the way the knee indents came out after i put some paint on it, but that just means back to the filler and sand paper!

I made the seat from scratch, too. Florist foam - bondo - two part plaster mold - fiberglass - bondo - viola! Makes my bike look totally different. I wish i took some before pictures, but it was pretty far from a cafe to start. Monoshock, dohc twin, spine frame, etc. it's a weird cafe.

is it just the feel of the knee indents, or is it purely cosmetic? What is the problem with them? They don't look too bad?

I think all he meant was they're a bit rough around the edges and need some more body work. Typical once you get the first layer of primer on. That's when you really see the results of your filling/sanding.

Looking great!

It's hard to tell from the pictures. I've just started the bodywork on my knee indents on my CB750F tank as well. A light glaze of bondo is all I should require, but I could be in the same boat as Rainey?

Looks great raney, really nice. Do you have any pics of the seat build? How many layers of fibreglass did you put on the seat area? I'm almost ready to do mine and wondering how thick it's going to have to be.

Excatly, the indents are rough around the edges, literally. A few waves and a couple filler scratches. Nothing i wont be able to sort out, and when i spray the flat black, it'll look a lot better. I got a wild hair up my ass and decided to spray primer before doing a guide coat and I'm paying for it now. A lot of the primer has to come off to reapply more filler, but that's what you get for being hasty. As for the seat build, i didnt bother taking any in progress pictures, but i can answer any questions if you have them. Regarding layers, im not entirely sure. I cut the fiber into strips and laid it as a weave-like pattern It's probably 5 layers thick in some places, much less in others. I did add strips of flat stock like i mentioned in another thread, and that added a lot of strength. I was very statisfied with the two part mold system. It worred really well for me.
