Hello,
I picked up a basketcase 72 cb 350 twin. I am looking to possibly make an ARHMA novice production vintage racer out of it as I am located close to Road America in Elkhart Lake. I am more into the fabrication than the engines but am trying to learn as much as I can.

When I received the bike, the wiring harness was all cut up. I redid the wiring to just enough to start the bike so I can check the basics before I tear this thing apart. At first, I could only get spark out of the right spark plug. By switching the condensor and/or ignition wires to the other plug I did get spark out of it.....so, I think everything is good back to the points...more impeticular, the left point connected to the yellow wire. I did clean it a little with some strips of paper and the contact does fully close.

What are your recommendations for my next steps in troubleshooting?

thank you,
Steve

First, switch the wires on the points. Left point and coil is blue, right is yellow. The bike should be able to run on only one cylinder if everything else is OK.

thank you for the quick response...

I have switched the connections up to the points wires, but have done anything inside the points cover besides clean......are you saying actually remove the terminals in the points assembly and switch them there?

thank you again,
Steve

Excuse my last paragraph type....it should read that "I have NOT done anything inside the points cover yet except clean.

thank you,
Steve

Switch the terminals around if you need to. The colors aren't terribly important, but technically it should be blue on the left and yellow on the right. The main idea is that the left point goes to the left coil and the right point goes to the right coil. Obviously, the spark plug wires should go with the correct side as well.

thank you Sonreir,
I will put some gas in and try it tonight to see if it runs.

by the way...cool bike you have!

Make sure your points are properly adjusted. Also, if you plan to race the bike in AHRMA check their guide lines for acceptable modifications.
