Need opinions on air filter

Alright, on my GS550 the factory air box is hideous, however, I've heard that fitting and tuning pod filters on this bike is a nightmare. Still, I don't want to buy new side covers because of cost. My idea is to remove the factory box containing the filter, and attach a single large pod filter to the chamber that directs air to the carbs. In other words, run 1 exposed pod filter for 4 carbs by attaching the filter to the factory piece, and trash the box located beside the battery in the picture. My theory is that this would reduce air turbulence more than 4 individual filters, and clean up the trashy look of the area behind the motor. Anyone ever seen this done? Opinions on how it would look?

P.S. In doing this I would obviously relocate the battery and exposed wires.

There are setups from K&N and others to accomplish this. Still may require some re-jetting to get it to work right however. Ringo's Gulf and a few others have used them on here with great success. Hopefully some others will chime in but I wanted to give you a head start on searching posts. I think I have seen them mentioned on WWW.TheGSResources.Com website as well. May be more model specific on some dealers if you are anti K&N.
