Been Around the Block
Hi everyone, I started a 5th project last weekend. a 1989 rz frame that I had laying around, I had no motor for this frame so restoring it was out of the question, besides they all look the same to me. I enjoy taking a bike and altering things to accomplish a certain look or to perform better. In this case I want to build a vintage looking bike with a modern twist. I put 18 inch front and rear spoke wheels on from a kh400 I have parts from. I then put a rd400 air cooled engine in the frame, of course I had to take the sawzall to the frame and had no problem doing this( for you purists, hehe) The engine fits well and looks good, better then the original in my opinion. What i need input on is this, first of all should I go cafe racer or bobber? or something between both? stroker cafe bobber? should I use the original mono shock or go with duals? should I lower it or go high? this all depends on what style i decide to do. I am thinking the frame would be a cream or brown/bronz and the tank puke green or vinatge green.

here is a pic.

I think you're on to something there. The roller looks good in the photo. I think a vintage'ish cafe would be in order. Build a vintage looking tail section/seat, vintage controls, obnoxiously loud chambers, and it's gonna be a unique ride. You can probably get by with the mono shocker too. Either way would be cool. For me, a cafe would be in line.

wow, i say you use what's there, keep the stance like it, and use the mono as well. it's already shaping up to be an awesome bike. I wouldn't complicate it too much. you already put a different motor in there. that's enough work for me.. cafe all the way!

Ok Mono it is then, will get that done today, i am thinking a brown leather saddle like seat/bumbstop.

That is a REALLY nice tank. I'd like to emphasize it by making a scrambler with polished aluminium fenders. Play with some tubing to really brace up the back and hjold the fender in place, and put a sprung solo seat on it. Higher bars and chrome head light.

OH- and a chrome high pipe with a bigass heat shield on it.
(bash plate optional- unless you really go out in a field)

Ok well here it is, I added a side stand, chrome headlight, and put the mono back together. I am thinking of cutting the sub frame and rebuilding it, 70s style racer for sure, but also cafe style.

so many options....

thanks for all the input everyone, will keep posting pics.

How about the spoke wheels? do they work on this bike or should I put the original rz ones back on it? it would make things easyer, but then I would loose that vintage look I am trying to get.

I like the spoked ones and the frame too. Find a nice newer styled race seat to bolt to the frame. Kinda like Squirley (sp)

I also have a GSX fork set up like that, I am considering putting it on but it wont look right with spokes.
