New Coils?

Been Around the Block
i've got a '76 CB750 with frayed spark plug wires, and the wires are built in to the coils so I have to replace everything. Everything I've heard says go Dyna, and I need the 5ohm with my stock ignition. Does this sound right?

I thought the green 3.0 ohm units... but if you read this from Z-1 you may be better off with the 5 ohm bits... I'd play it safe and call Dynatek at 1-800-928-3962
Check the resistance of the coils you are replacing to ensure a correct
match.
Never select a coil with a lower resistance than your ignition system
- this will cause the coils to overheat and burn out... It is OK to select coils
with a slightly higher resistance. For example 3.0 ohm coils with a 1.5 ohm CDI
ignition. While this isn't optimal, it works and allows you to switch your CDI
ignition over to a Dyna-S in the future.

You can pull the wires out and epoxy new ones in

Sounds simple enough. They didn't seem like they would just "pull out" though.

I don't think the old Honda coils are designed to have the wires replaced. I could be wrong. Not sure how the wires are fastened inside the coils, but they're designed to be permanent from the factory.

I'd splurge on new coils and proper cables.

BTW - what do 'frayed' spark plug cables look like? Got some pics? You can replace the spark plug boots easily for $5 and can even cut the cables and splice in new ones (NGK makes a splicer just for that purpose).

Frayed probably isn't the right word. But my wires are mostly electrical tape. I get arcing to the cylinder head. I just saw the NGK splicers and am gonna order some. Is there a specific kind of new wire I need to buy?

the wires are held in by epoxy, at the bottom of the hole they are in is a pin that makes the connection to the wire. the wire is essentially impaled. I have some pix of when I did mine...
chipped off the epoxy.

Some of the insulation remained in the hole...
I used a anchor bolt to hand screw into the hole, notice the tape to indicate max depth so i wouldnt damage the pin at the bottom of the hole.

bazinga.....
