New guy from Iowa- RD400

Hello everyone, my names is Kevin and I'm here to introduce myself and to show my winter project.

It's a 1976 Yamaha RD400 that I picked up in non-running condition about 2 months ago from someone in my Subaru club. Since I bought it the carbs have been cleaned and rejetted, the ignition timing has been reset, a portion of the wiring has been gone through, and a different kickstarter from HVC Cycle has been added. It seems like everytime I touch the bike I find something new that has been done to it at some point. The bike now starts on the first or second start, and I'm looking forward to working on it, and eventually riding it once the snow melts.

Sweet! I too and am from Iowa, named Kevin, and have two rough RD400's! Your's turned out sweet!!

What are the odds? Have any build threads I can look at? I can't take credit for the way the bike looks, it seems to have been passed around the Ames area and modified by a few people. Some of it is well done, some of it not. I'm just trying to straighten it out and enjoy it.
 
Welcomr to DTT Kevin. And glad to see Stik chiming in as well! Love seeing more RDs floating around....
 
Hey, I'm up in Spencer. Haven't looked at my RD's in quite a while. I've been working on my house, an old pickup, and older bike. Hopefully I'll get the 2 stroke fever again and get a crackin' on it.

I've been through there. I have a few projects too, just not enough space. After I finish the rd I'm hoping to finish my Galant VR4.
 
I don't make it over there that often, but I'll get at you if I do.

Took the bike for its first ride today, a lot faster than what I was expecting. I've rode primarily 600cc sport bikes and a couple older 750 Yamahas and I was worried I would be down on power, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I also have been working on cleaning up some wiring and replaced the speedometer with one from a bicycle.

I just stumbled upon this thread an noticed that a few guys from the Des Moines area were posting. I live in Ankeny and would be up to do some riding with some fellow cafe-ers this season. I am pretty new to the site as well. I am just finishing up my first project bike, a 73 CB500. Few minor items to finish and it will be good to go. Nice work on the RD BTW!
 
When u coming to visit on that Kevin , I will give you five dollar to ride that to my place ha ha .

I haven't had to do much yet other than dick with getting it running. Broke one of the rod end bearings for the rear sets and trying to find new ones at the moment. I've also been working on a better mount for the gauge and a seat pan. The last owner was really into zip ties.

Have any pics of your bike?

Great looking bike, that triple is perfect. I see quite a few cb350/cb360s around town, but yours looks the nicest.

Eldora seems like a long trip on this little thing, I might attempt it eventually if you let me ride the Triumph.
 
Forgot to say I got a new helmet, doesn't really fit the vintage theme but I can use it for autox too.
