New here, cam chain jammed in 450 motor.

While tearing apart the top of my 69 cl450 motor (i'm rebuilding all of it), I goofed and made a mistake that I need help correcting. I never got my master cam chain link visible when I began pulling off parts, now my cam chain seems jammed (wont budge in any direction), but I can freely rotate the crank still. The chain wont just pull around I'm assuming because the other rocker is against the springs. How can I rotate my chain around without the crankshaft? Should I just cut the chain and get a new one? Options?

Thanks!

Great I was hoping someone would say that, so I can stop scratching my head... Thanks for the speedy help!

As far as i know they are endless chains so no master link

If you cut it you need to open the cases to replace it
Get a factory manual

No they have a master link but it's a weird style not like the kind on a drive chain but ya replace it anyways

Let go of it with the screw driver, in the TOP of the head there an idler gear that you can remove that will get more slack.

Once you get all the slack you can, you can get the cams out if need be and LOOk to see what is holding it, but yeah replacing it is a good idea, they can be bought all over, just make sure you get the correct master link.

+1 on the manual.

Side note, that exhaust cam looks like it is trashed.

All too familiar with that motor, and i can tell you from a great deal of experience that there are a few things you should do with it.

-first off, i hope you took photos of where the cam marking were, because there are a lot of different markings on there that can really eff up the motor if not done correctly on reassemble.

-you can cut the chain, or you can pull the cam sleeves off the sides of the motor and let the chain hang even looser--but i never found a master link, so i just cut it. Some say there are master links, some say they are continuous chains, mine did not have a master link.

-Another thing that tended to bind when i was working with the cam chain was the top follower sprocket, so you can remove that and just put a screw driver in there to keep it centered in the whole, and that'll give you more wiggle room.

WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T DROP THAT DAMN CHAIN IN THE CASE...YOU'LL HATE YOURSELF.

If you need any help, let me know and i'll see if i can provide some good helpful info.

Best,

H

AH YES, the dropped chain. I used two pieces of WIRE to hold the thing in place and TWO really long piece of STRING as well. ;D

The master links on these chains are just a slightly different color and the ends of the little metal rods just get smashed to hold it on. You can spot it because there are little holes through the rods to smack with a punch. They are pretty much 1 time use links

Thanks to all of you...seems I may be needing help on many issues...i'll start a build thread for my annoying questions ::)
