... if a chain/sprocket set are excessively worn will they give a sense of surging/pulsing when a bike is maintaining a steady speed? I get this big time at any speed, but it is more severe the slower the bike is running in any given gear. my 22 year old yx600 is wearing the original chain w/16,000 miles on it now.

Yes they will. You actually have tight spots in your chain. Time to replace everything.
