1978 CB750F-Coming along nicely!
Hi everyone,

Just recently acquired a 1978 Honda CB750F SS on craigslist for 1700 dollars. I really should have payed much less but it was running and was kept in good condition...or so I thought. The engine takes a while to start with the starter button then once it starts it has a deep rumble that sounds amazing. Have to warm it up a bit but all in all it's fine. Just today I go to start it up and no go. The starter button is depressed and it sounds like it might be wanting to start then it just dies. I'm pretty sure I killed the battery running the lights and engine the first 30 min. Now it doesn't want to start at all. I went to Autozone to get a new battery and charger and am now charging the new battery. Hopefully once it's all charged it should work. This bike has a lot of issues and I'll be putting in the work to get it running but it'll be worth it once I turn it into a cool looking cafe. Here are some pictures of what I noticed need work and also first tear down. Hope to be showing off soon!

I had the exact same bike... it was my first attempt at a cafe build. I paid 625 dollars for it and it ran just fine before I messed with it. It had the clunky vetter fairing attached to it.. cut all that stuff off and hand pounded the tank in.. did lots of work and ran out of money.

Dont let the idea in your head about this bike drain your wallet and make you suffer. Keep this build as realistic financially as possible and spend alot of time cleaning it and reconditioning it by hand. The less new parts you can put into it, the more money you will save and the more will power your gonna have to put into your work. I would put some drag bars on this thing.. some old style tires... fat ones with old style street tread. I would lower it a bit and keep it nice and simple. Very cool bike, lost of parts and examples on here and other sites for builds. Way cool man!

I appreciate it! That's exactly what I plan on doing. Just going to keep it simple since it's my first budget build. I recently took the carbs out and cleaned them up a bit. Although they were pretty pristine which was surprising. I guess that's a good thing, ha! Well, as soon as I put the carbs back together the bike wouldn't start and it started leaking fuel out of the #2 float bowl. I guess I must have flooded the engine and not have installed the float needles correctly. Well, it's time to take it apart and start again.

Ya, I am having my doubts about the job I will be doing on my Carbs... seems the more and more I read, the more I start to have concerns about a full rebuild on the Carbs. I guess a person has to ask themselves if they would spend more time and money trying to make it work and having to replace them with an Ebay set... or just to bring it into a shop and have them do it.

Make sure you do not get anything in the Carbs that would eat away at any seals. Pretty common sense I guess, I know not all seals are made of rubber, but different chemicals do different stuff I guess.

Good luck !
