Newbie about to start my first build - '82 Honda CB450 Nighthawk

True, my CB750 prefers a bit of a roll forward to get down into first, I know of a CL350 that needs the same treatment.
and make sure the shifter lever is not making contact with say the exhaust pipe.....

Well, I tried moving the shifter into different positions, made sure it wasn't hitting everything, and tried calling it every cuss word I know and none of that seemed to work. So I'm think I'm going to try pulling the clutch and making sure its put back in correctly. I don't remember if I said before but in the box full of random parts that came with it there were a bunch of clutch plates. My assumption is that some PO changed out the plates at some point and I'm hoping that maybe he just didn't get them put back in correctly. Hopefully I can get to it this weekend.

Clutch has nothing to do with shifting when engine is not running, it should shift through all the gears without touching the clutch. Try it and like I said you may need to rock the bike back and forth between shifts. Find neutral, rock bike forward a bit while down shifting and it should click into 1, then rock back and forth once and up shift, should smoothy go into 2, then repeat until 5 or 6 shifter will no longer go up the same. should be able to then go down to first the same. all with engine off.

If it won't do that the problem is somewhere in the transmission, not the clutch.

Awww crap, Maritime. I was afraid someone was going to tell me that, lol. But thanks for the info.

Yeah, I did try rocking it and shifting it without it running and without using the clutch. It still wouldn't go into 1st or shift higher than 4th. But I will try it again just to be extra sure.

I read in the service manual that to work on the transmission you have to split the case on the engine. I stopped reading after that since I figured it was best to rule out clutch problems before taking the step to transmission. How much of a pain in the ass is that? Sounds like I'm going to get to do a major tear down after all, lol.

I don't have my CM manual on this PC, but check to see if there are any trouble shooting notes on shifting, may not need to completely tear into it if there is a possible linkage between the sifter and transmission that can go out of adjustment etc. I can't remember if there is.

doana panik yet..tis not very likely to be in the gearbox proper ,much more likely to be in the mechanisms that go about to rotating the shift drum that stuff can be acces by pullin' side case and clutch

once you do that you can rotate the trans input shaft by hand wilst attempting to sellect gears and hopefully observe da ishoe good luck !!

That's what I was trying to get too, I went to BB but had to do some work LOL. It is likely there something is lose or worn. I found a thread that was for an older version of the motor and the owner found a lose bolt causing his bike to not stay in gear, the same thing could prevent it from going into gear as well. that stuff In the BB fiche is behind the clutch I believe and easy to get at to check it out.

XB and Maritime, you guys fucking rock. Thanks for the information, and for the link XB. I've been trying to find some other threads with similar issues, and I really appreciate yall helping me out. I'll be sure to post what I find.

It's common for a small amount of rust to build up internally when these set. Pull the side cover and work the selector back n forth towards first gear and should eventually go into it. Do the same for the upper gears. You can't do it with the foot lever cause a small amount of binding occurs.

Jooh-Yah, thanks for the info! I haven't had time to mess with anything yet so I will definitely try that first. That would be sweet if thats all it is.

no prob, mine was that way when I first got it going.

So is the selector under the left side engine cover that covers the wheel where the timing marks are? I assume its close to the shift lever.

no, far from the timing marks, very far indeed.... :( clutch engine moter right side brake re-err nere right side foot pedel the shifter shaft is long and crosses thru the engine

I need to go out and look at the bike and not rely on my admittidly faulty memory... I assume you have to drain the oil before pulling the right side cover?
