i have a 74 honda cb 360 that i only have a bill of sale for. can anyone tell me the steps i need to take to get a title for it in ca? it hasn't been registered since 2000 if that helps at all

call the DMV to get the number for the special investigation unit or whatever its called, tell them that you need someone to come and verify the VIN, then they will help you through the process, don't listen to anyone else, they will just give you the run-around...

Go down to the DMV with your Bill of sale and if it hasn't been registered within the past 7 years they'll give you a form and a referral to go down to the CHP office and have them run the numbers and inspect the bike. If it comes up clean you go back to the DMV and they process the reg. Once the bike is complete and running you have to have a safety inspection (lights and mechanical stuff). It's a hassle, but not too difficult.

Can anyone confirm they were able to title there bike in California with only bill of sale? I purchased a 72' DS7 from Georgia and had it shipped to California. I am heading to the DMV this week and want to know what i'm in for. Hope someone can help!

Thanks,
Anthony

Hey Dude,
I am not sure if you got this resolved but here is the skinny.

- To find out who hold the title fill out the INF-70 form from the DMV. F-it here's the link
http://dmv.ca.gov/forms/inf/inf70.pdf pay the $5.

- If you know who the registered owner is and have an address send them a letter requesting the title via "Registered Mailing." Do this by going to the post office and forking out 10 bucks. SAVE YOUR RECEIPT AND PAPERWORK!! The title holder is given 30 days to respond.

- After the 30 days are up if the person doesn't respond get onto the DMV website again and download the REG-227 form. (duplicate title form)
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg227.pdf

-Fill it out and pay the $12. When you mail this form include with it your bill of sale (a copy) and the receipt and copy of the letter you mailed to the owner. In most cased the letter will come back to you. DO NOT OPEN!!! just send. I would also include a nice letter stating the situation in which you acquired the bike. On that note before all of this make sure the bike isn't stolen! you can do a free search on the VIN. Google it.

If all goes well after the bureaucratic BS you will get a title mailed to you. It's a long wait. Believe me, but in the end you will be a few bucks but be stoked. While you wait save your money to pay for the registration fees and dues .

that pretty much is how to go about it. if anyone is going to buy with bill of sale only make sure the seller writes the year make model vin etc describing bike as much as possible. also how they got the bike and if possible. and it might even help to write if they tried to get a hold of the previous/original owner for a title.

of course this wont help if it is indeed a stolen bike but if it's not then it may help skip some steps towards obtaining a title.

I have a 92 ZX11 no title bill of sale only.
I checked it's not stollen but hasn't been registered since 05.
Paid $500.00 for it with 16XXX miles on it and have another maybe $150.00 in parts.
Just want to know how it went with some of you guys and how much you spent.

I personally didn't go through it but had a good friend go through a mess with a newer sportbike. it was a PITA and stressful since it was a shady deal but in the end it was just as posted above. send certified mail to lienholder/owner/title holder... wait for reply. if no reply in a certain amount of time.. bike is yours pending new title/tax/registration.
