No Title in Michigan

I've gotten jerked around with this process so much. no one at the SOS seems to have a clue on how to do this, but I always hear how easy it is in Michigan. anyone out there had success getting a title for a bike in the great lakes state? HELP!

You can get a bonded title here - it means doing a multistate theft check, putting down a bond on the bike, and getting an appraisal from a licensed repair facility.

I've not done it myself, and understand that it is generally a pain in the ass. The process was pretty straightforward until a couple of years ago.

If you look up Checkered Past Cycles in Galesburg, MI, I know that they do the appraisals, and may be able to give you a more useful breakdown of the process.

TR-205

I just looked up the process and filled out the form.

It has to be less than $2500 and over 10 years old, and not able to get ahold of the PO

This is great info, I've looked in to this a few times myself but to no avail. Thanks for the information my Great Lakes State friends.

update on my TR-205

the wife took the form in, they asked what the situation was. She explained we never got a title, were promised one, now we can not contact the PO.

They took the info, passed it on to someone else, and said it would be 15-20 minutes to get approved.

20 minutes later it was approved, and we have a title in the mail!

no additional costs, other than I had to pay 3x the tax I SHOULD have paid because you have to pay the appraised value.

I had a similar situation with my bike. I had it titled in Michigan, then California, then moved back 15 years ago and never re-registered it in MI. No idea where the title went. I filled out the form, paid the tax and I was good to go. As long as there are no "issues" with the ownership when they run the VIN it's not a difficult process. I also recommend doing it at one of the "supercenter" SOS offices if you can.

Hint: Before you go to the SOS office get the kbb or nada value of their website and print it out. You can go with the lowest appraised value. In my case it was only $380 (the value, not the tax). And yes, it has to be under $2500 and over 10 years old.
