No Top Triple Tree?

I want to use clip ons and keep the stock headlight clamp. i think it is a cleaner look which allows me space for a speedo and brake reservoir . What are the cons of running NO top triple tree?
I was thinking about welding a large washer to the fork tube caps so the bars dont just pop off if the were to loosen or something.
please let me know if this has been done or if anyone has any advice

thanks,
great site, cant wait to contribute around here

Pete

Sorry, can't be done. The tripples work together to provide lateral stability to the forks.

Really? Is this a serious question?

Hell no you shouldn't do that!

The dude probably did not know, cut him some slack we are all learners here. some more advanced then others. Just a serious answer will do it. No it cannot be done, Your forks will collapse. I am not even sure you will make it two feet.

Wasn't trying to bust the guy's balls, hopefully it didn't come across too harsh. Even someone with no motorcycle experience should realize there's some strong forces at work here.

I can see it as a legitimate question if someone is just starting out and wanting to do something different. On that note, agreed with all here, it wouldn't work. Milling down the top triple tree if you're not running anything mounted on it is about the only option you have if you want a clean look. A machine shop should charge about 50-100$ to skim down the stock bar mount, remove the gauge mount holes, starter switch mounts, etc.

thanks for the serious responses..
as i started reading i was second guessing this forum.
I am new, I;m young and havnt been riding bikes for a long time nor have schooling in any mechanics.
I posted it knowing there had to be a reason noone else was doing it. but i didnt think it was that serious.
thanks for the responses, i'll just shave off the bar mounts and what not and try to make it as sleek looking as possible

thanks

Now that you have been soundly bitch-slapped by the forum, I will tell you that the idea is not all that outlandish.

A lot of cheap Chinese scooters have no top triple tree. They also are light machines, and they feel like the whole front end is made of rubber because it flexes so much. That is not to say that it isn't possible. There are a few custom builds out there that have a front end made much like a bicycle front end. They are engineered to do that from the get go. If you were to take a standard front end and simply delete the top triple tree, you would have an imprecise flexing front end at best, and a complete structural failure at worse, (and more likely.)

I would have thought you had a better idea of a forum bitch slap....
This question was answered rather nicely over all

There is a world of difference between a vehicle designed to work that way and one that was designed to have a top and bottom clamp.

In short, it would be very dangerous to try to ride a motorcycle without a top triple clamp. the top clamp stiffens the front forks and helps resist twisting, but it's major role is to stop the fork legs from bending back and having your wheel embedded in the motor.

While it us true that the bottom clamp does most of the work and that's why we see super stiff 6 bolt lower clamps, but they need a suitably designed upper clamp to hold the plot together.

As a general rule i would suggest that you do not machine any metal off much of anything until/unless you have studied the part and determined that its structural integrity will not be compromised. And if in doubt, don't do it. Old bikes are marginal enough as it is.

try looking around at some aftermarket suppliers, some bikes (cb's) have a simple milled top available for around 100 bucks. they look allright for a simple clean look (like ringos, as mentioned before). I also am new to this (bikes) coming from the old english roadster scene. as a general rule when modifying a vehicle, you can strip off extrainious stuff, the stuff that makes it comfortable, or legal the "decorations", but structural mods, specifically any mods the neck of the frame, steering, suspension or brakes, should be left to experienced builders, or at the very least pick up preengineered parts or talk to people who have done the exact mod youre talking about. good luck and I hope we didnt scare you off.

Yep it's 'probably' serious? (could be a troll?)
Anyway, if someone with some cycling experience saw it, it may look and sound 'sensible'
(I must be getting old and tired, definitely being too nice last year or so ;D )

Just in case it is a 'real' question, DON'T DO IT

but you have 3 bikes - I assume you sometimes ride them too. If you have ridden a bike and used a front brake or even i you have played with legos as a kid you will understand SOMETHING about the forces.

I was teaching for over 11 yrs, you'd be surprised how little mechanical knowledge the average 'student' has.
At an 'educated' ;D guess, I would say about 3% have any understanding of mechanical/electrical concepts.
They know how to cheat real good though and get artificially high GPA :( (a lot got really pissed when I wouldn't 'go over' quiz day before they took it ::) )
Probably tell you how to get all the cheat codes for whatever 'video' game your playing or where to find bootleg downloads.

;D You are getting much too soft, P.

Hahaha,
I dont mind gettin my boys busted.
I was just workin on the bike, its all striped down and on a stand with no wheels so it seemed stable at the time lol. Looking back i see it was a dumb question, but hey, everyones gotta learn. I saw that companies (like bullit) do make some but none specific for an xs500, and i dont know if the xs650 would fit
I appreciate all the feedback, glad to see this forum is so active
thanks again
