Hi bros :)

Picked up a CM400 T from 1981,wanted one from my birth-year! 8)
I don't have much experience in building bikes so any help will be welcome!

I have allot of questions regarding the transform of this bike into a cafe racer.
I want do this project in a few stages!

I want to remove the air filter and place racing kelks onto the carbs, but I have read that this is not possible using the standard carbs! Is this right? Witch carbs should I buy? I'm looking to keep this build a bit price conscience so if possible to keep stock carbs !

I want to place the battery out of the triangle, so I guess in the back of the seat!
The question that I have If I replace it with a lithium ion battery, whats the minimum Ah that I need for the bike, the stock lead battery is 12V and 12Ah!
http://www.shido-batteries.com/html/technical-specifications/index.html

If I look at Shido the battery can be replaced by a 4Ah ,LION battery.
But needs the battery be so big or can I go for the smaller battery,( lighter, cheaper, easyer to hide)

I readed somewhere that one had replaced its CM400 battery with a DEWALT battery pack from a cordless drill!
Is the LTX4L-BS LION -S- 12V/ 1,6Ah /CA 105/ Wh 20 big enough to use ? The CA in A what does this mean?

The wheels, I like the comstar wheels but wanted the same size wheels so I bought 2 wheels from a CB400N so both 18 inch ( does this give problems?) because original wheel is 16 inch!
Do I need a different gearwheel?

The engine I don't want to open this because I don't have the knowledge and the guy I bought it from said the block is fine!( maybe in the future)
I see this as a getting into cafe-racer project!

I wanna keep the bike street-legal, so I need the light but replace the side light with smaller led lights ! I wanna keep the front light, think this look ok!
The instrument panel is something I wanna keep in the first stage!

What do I need to do to the back suspension can I keep this stock? How do I test If they are still safe? I have the plan to place the fork feet 1- 2 inch trough the (front-plate, don't know the word for this) so I can put clip-ons onto this! Or is this a silly idea? Do I need to buy new front fork for safety?

My first plan is to get a new oil filter and some new oil into the block, does anybody has good suggestion on witch oil to buy or what to look for.

The front break disk can I put holes into this or is this a stupid idea?

I'm just getting started so much questions yet to come!

Thanks in advance for the help ;D

first of all go on the internet and buy yourself a cm400 manual. in there everything is explained how to do maintenance on the bike, pescripted settings, torques, what oil you need and how much of it etc etc...

also is the bike a runner? because you're talking about changing carbs and putting velocity stacks on there but first make sure she runs.
(and i don't see why you can't put stacks on your carbs)

i think oil should be 10w40 i think but i'm not sure, that's why you should get a manual...

when she runs come back and bring some pics ;)

good luck, should be a fun project, but take your time

Part one

Got the cm400t workshop manual!
The bike is running, but now the battery is flat so I want to buy a new one but a lion!
And I prefer the smaller the better, but I don't know How small I can go Without running into problems.
So some advice from someone who is experienced would be appreciated.

So found out the crank amperage is the most important ! But the service manual doesn't say whats the minimum for the start engine for the cm400t. On the internet I found that most lead-acid battery are rated @ 120CA( is this right?) so is 120 the minimum or is 105 sufficient?

Did you find a battery? Mine needs to be replaced and A new style battery sounds like the right idea.

This thread helped me a lot with my CM400 http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=26184.0

Good luck with the build!

I have a Ballistic Battery. They have a drop down menu on their website that will tell you what size you need for your model.
