Nostalgic Story Time - What got you into motorcycles?

Desmo, most of us don't like having other people so much as sit on our rides, let alone actually take the bike for a ride. I have a couple friends I'll let ride my bike, but they usually are ready to sign over anywhere from 1-4 finished bikes if they mess mine up. One of them also put up his girlfriend as collateral along with 6 project bikes.

Some of us have been riding longer than many of the site members have been alive. We've learned the hard way not to loan out our bikes. Or accept offers from other folks to ride their bikes.

It's cool to see how everyone got into motorcycles. I probably being one of the younger generation have always loved motorcycles since I was a kid. My dad had purchased a motorcycle before I was born rode it for a number of years then it stopped running and sat in the garage. I remember while growing up always looking at the bike wanting to own it and ride it. My dad would always say it would never happen cause my mother would kill him but over time as it sat in the garage the offer must have been right. Bought the bike I coveted when I was 20, tore the sucker apart and rebuilt it then rode it for several years. Now I am 'gutting' it again to make it my own project bike.

I feel about the same as scruffy does with his bike, don't ask, it's not yours.

Oh I know Full and well what can happen and the first time I let someone try my first bike (ninja 250) THEY DUMPED IT...They lied and said they knew what they were doing so I was the fool...Nowadays I Only Ask if it's someone I know and have ridden with ...I own a couple bikes that I have never ridden, and that sux so i feel obligated to ask to try bikes out that i would probably never end up buying or "testing" otherwise (bike in the back I havn't got to run and it kills me as i want nothing more than to ride it)

Parents always said I couldnt have one. Then my girlfriend at the time said I couldnt have one.
So I did what any sane man would do, I went out and bought a motorcycle.

Thats the spirit!

My dad is the reason I drive anything with an engine.
Dad's side on the family has always had fun stuff, living in a small village on the shore to a big lake in the northern parts of the country, there was always a place and time for cars, bikes, boats and snowmobiles. Not complaining. :D

But The first "big bike" I drove was a Suzuki GS400, my uncle let me drive his bike while he was sitting behind me,
I was probably 11 years old and had only ridden a 50cc dirtbike before that. My feet couldn't touch the ground at all.
Well, out on a dirt road we went, all good, my smile was bigger then Jokers!
Until I tried a weak-ass maneuver trying to change track and down we went!
Resulted in some scrapes and cuts on me and my uncle and some scratches on the GS.
I think my Uncle was less worried about the bike and more worried what my mom (his big sister) would do to him after seeing me with bleeding hands and knees :D

That did discourage me for a while, but hurts is soon forgotten and the desire to ride came back, but always other stuff in the way, never the less.
I'm here now and I want to ride more then ever!

Visions of being Marlon Brando. I sold a perfect car to have only a Ducati S4 as my sole transportation, when the wind chill blasted my fingers to bone, I often thought "What would Brando do?".

I'm no Brando, I'm sure he himself wasn't opposed to cages and practical modes of transportation. Fast forward to the present, not only did a sell another good car, this time I'm reliant on a two stoke. I obviously haven't a shred of common sense, but a strong desire to live inside fantasy.

The TV Show "Then Came Bronson". Richard Parks played Bronson.

He ran across the country on a Harley Sportster, taking odd jobs, helping people out of situations. The picture of riding across country, doing whatever you felt like doing, had a strong appeal. Out of High School, I took a job at a brokerage firm (NYC) and started saving some money. Bought a $300 1969 Honda CB350 for my ride. this was 1972. I was making $90 a week at the time....but remember, gas was $0.25 a gallon and a new Impala was about $3k. A dollar went a little further than.

Before I had enough seed money, I was laid off, went onto the Army, and never did take the cross country ride I wanted. But I had my motorcycle, and my love of riding remains.

Maybe after I retire, I'll take that trip. But on a larger than a 350cc bike.

I've never asked to ride another mans bike. When asked if I want to ride another mans bike, I decline unless they insist.

When we all went out for a Sunday run somewhere or the other in the early 60's, it was quite common for good friends to swap bikes for the ride home. But then we were all well aware of each other's abilities.

Ha! Thanks, that was a fun read.

Riding on the tank of my dad's CB750 while 3 years old around Hunter Mountain in upstate new york. About the only time I was ever really happy with him.

(And yet it took me 33 more years to finally get my own, after dithering since graduating college and finding lots of excuses...)

Can't get good beer in the state of Tennessee. Even Guinness is watered down to less than 6%... And don't even think about good whiskey here, 18 year old Scotch is considered good here, it (like Jack Daniels) to me is something you wash tools and clean spray guns with.

But... come on over. My place is pagan, family, gearhead and naturist friendly... Supposed to be a bike and vintage car/truck thing at our place in September (maybe, depends on harvest schedules).

Where in Tennessee are you? I've got a few friends on the Pigeon river. Mostly a bunch of rainbow family.

My old man grew up with bikes, my parents used to go on holidays on his bike when they were younger so neither of them had an issue with me getting one when I was 15.
I remember when I was about 10 on the back of the bike hanging on with my eyes shut (due to only having an open face helmet) while we were blasting along. It was after we got back and I asked how fast we went when I found out what 'doing the ton' meant.

Back in my old neighborhood, there was a really nice section of woods behind the houses with trails and everyone had dirtbikes........everyone except me. My buds were always generous and let me take their bikes for a spin. It was such a rush for me. Unfortunately, I never DID get a dirtbike of my own (cheap-ass parents!), and always wanted one but could never afford it, till a few years ago, when I made a Craiglist trade with someone. Originally, it was gonna be a bobber, but a bandmate reminded me about cafe bikes. From that point on, I was forever hooked.

My grandparents( on my dads side) rode things like Honda s90s and trail 90's. My dad's had so many bikes he cant remember them.
I started rideing when I was 7, stoped when I was in HS, and then started up again Fall of 2011.

Rosemark, 36 miles northeast of downtown Mogadishu (Memphis)... find Memphis, go north on US 51 to Millington, trace your finger east 13 miles, then go north to the county line. I live on a former plantation on the Shelby County - Tipton County line.

When I was a kid I always used to say that I wanted to get a motorcycle when I grew up. Once I got older I had a curious interest in bikes but nothing serious. I knew my dad used to ride back in the late 70's when he was in his 20's and I had seen a few pictures of him on a bike and always thought they were cool. I'd see bikes with for sale signs on them as I drove by and I'd slow down to check them out but that was about it. Seemingly out of nowhere my brother told me he was going to get his MC permit and was going to take the riding safety course for his license. I thought it would be cool to learn how to ride so I told him I'd take the course with him. Once I got on a bike I was hooked.

My brother and I had that typical sibling rivalry.. But we had a few moments where we truly enjoyed each other. Two that stand out are our rats, and our motorcycles. The rats happened when we were in middle school. We purchased a few rats and mice from a pet store.. Over the next month, we got along so well our mum started getting suspicious. She started snooping around, trying to figure out what we could have been up to.. She found our rat/mouse stash, which had multiplied quickly, in my brothers closet. Poor mum. I suppose we didn't get along again until one day we decided we wanted a motorcycle. We were in high school, and our request was immediately refused. So, we came home with an XS250 the next day. I still like the older bikes, and having something to work on. He rides a Harley all over the country.
