hey guys Ive noticed not many people are chopping up suzukis.. is everyone scared of the shaft drive or what? I just pick up an 80 gs850 pics to come some. Its totaly stock.. for now! I will have some parts up for grabs soon. Probably seat headlight fenders and old carbs. Maybe exhaust. If any of you guys have a 4 into 1 for sale let me know. Have a good one gents!
I can proudly say I approve of chopping up suzis(in a tasteful manner ). You may have looked at my intro.. 2 x gs750s with a couple of pics. I'm not sure I would purchase a shaft drive model for a cafe project though? I thought that generally speaking the 'sportier' models are produced with chain drives while cruisers and tourers may use a shaft drive. Having said all that if I happened to have a shaft drive model just laying around the place I would be tempted to mod it anyway
Goodluck with your build.. keep us posted!
If you havn't discovered the gs resources yet this site will help with gs series bikes specifically.. a wealth of knowledge.. http://www.thegsresources.com/
I am heavily into a GS850 shaftie at the moment. Waiting on my tail section from Roc City and other parts but in my opinion it makes a fine looking Cafe......ride what ya like, not what others say shouldn't be done is my opinion !
Hahaha... There are actually a number of Suzis on the board. It seems like the builds dont get updated as often as some others so they tend to fall behind on the lists.
lol...isn't that the truth Mike. I haven't even started a build thread to fall behind on yet. This pic is about 2yrs old, mocking up the seat and tank, i'm really bad at taking pics of my work.
There are several two stroke Suzuki builds going on right now. There are fewer of us than Honda's though, so our threads don't draw quite as much interest.
Actually the two valve air cooled Zook's are unjustly over looked . They are save for the charging system (easily fixed) and the camchain tensioner (better than most) very reliable and durable engines . I can only remember one final drive and perhaps a couple of u-joints that had grenaded .
I remember the valve shims getting mixed in with Yam-Kaw box and causing problems
I love my GS1100 shafty. I think a reason a lot of people don't cafe the shaft driven bikes is because they lose more horsepower on the way to the rear wheel than chain driven bikes (23% I believe as opposed to 15% for the chain driven bikes, according to thegsresources.com). For touring, though, they're fantastic, as you won't have to worry about cleaning and lubing your chain a few times during a long trip. I definitely bought my 1100 for touring, but it's a kick in the ass around town as well.
All that being said, as far as looks go, there is nothing wrong with turning a shaft driven bike into a cafe. Lots of nice shaft driven BMW cafe's out and about. Looking forward to the build thread.
