Nuts and Bolts

Good finds 2b, Our donor bike was a bit late in arriving, so I haven't been able to do up a list of bolts yet, but it is due to arrive tomorrow, so I will hopefully get to make a start on it then.

Ok, collected the donor yesterday and started stripping it. I now have a list of nearly every nut and bolt. Before sending them off to my supplier to price them all up, I thought I would get some preferences from you guys.

I have NOT stripped or measured any actual engine assembly bolts - since few of us are disassembling the motors this seemed unnecessary

I have NOT measured the swingarm pivot.

I have NOT measured hand lever and switch gear assembly screws/bolts

Are people wanting to go Stainless everywhere, even where the bolt or nut is on a black painted part?

Having had a look down the list I believe that most bolts should be fairly straight forward to get if I order in high enough quantity.

As all existing bolts are marked 8.8 or unmarked I plan to supply properly graded 8.8 throughout.

In case you missed it earlier: the dome nuts for the shock are metric fine, as is the muffler bracket bolt.

Easy to miss!

Thanks Crazy, I did miss that! Started checking threads at the beginning of measuring then just fell into the habit of assuming everything was the same.

Whatever you have measured would be a good start, could always do others later one by one if it seems like a good idea.

What size are the bolts at the top of the front shocks? What grade of stainless should I replace them with? I think I will replace those when the spacers go in.

The guys at Stainless Cycle at the link listed below already do full kits for a lot of classic bikes.
I have bought a kit for my 1981 CB750K and my 1979 XS1100.

They ship them labeled so you know what goes where and with a small packet of anti-seize compound.
Plus you can get standard stainless finish or polished.

If you don't see your bike listed email them they don't list everything.

Looking to get local Christchurch company Blacks Fastners to price these for me.

So I can give them a full list of requirements... I guess I will go A4 on them all? And which grade to go for 50 or 70 or 80?

Any others not on the list that need doing??

Replaced all the engine bolts with Stainless steel cap head bolts A2 & A4) within the last couple of weeks, so sizes are still fresh in my mind:

L/H& R/H engine cases: Approx 18 x M6 x 40 with a couple of M6 x 50
L/H & R/H clutch cap / skyteam engine plate: - 8 x M6 x 10
Chain guard: 2 x M6 x 10
Seat hump: 2 x M6 x 16
Handlebars: 4 x M6 x 16
Rocker Cover bolts: 3 x M6 x 20 (from memory)
Starter motor: 3 x M6 x 16

Looks much better and safe in the knowledge that they won't corrode or snap in a hurry!
