oil leak on left crankcase cover

Been Around the Block
Anyone use a thicker gasket than usually come with the gasket kits for the left hand crankcase cover? I kept having an oil leak where the LH cranks case covers butts to the crankcase...got rid of the gasket that came with a kit...it seemed to be too thin. I use some RTV black on it and seems to leak alot less but still a little bit of oil leaks.....was thinking of going to a thicker cork gasket material that i would cut out from a sheet i could obtain on ebay. any suggestions? and is anyone else having or have had this problem?

I went with a thicker cork gasket and have no more leaks. Is there something inside that needs attention though? My bike is not running as good as it use to before the leak? I changed the oil and made sure the oil level is correct.

Thanks...

shouldnt have anything to do with the leak repair. How long since you last started it? right after the repair or long after? did any debris get in anywher...could be a slew of things .

It started to hessitate on the road a couple of blocks from my house and when I got home, I noticed that oil was leaking from the cover everytime I tried to crank the engine. I replaced the gasket and changed the oil, now it doesn't start or idle without me holding the throttle. I was just wondering if something in there broke and caused oil to leak because if there is, all I did was seal off the leak externally, if that makes sense???

i suspect it is something else may be happening.......have you inspected other items on the engine? have you done any mods or component replacements..i.e. rings, pistons......how many miles....just trying to get an idea of the engine condition. btw mine is also still leaking from the left engine cover....not the stator cover but cover that the stator cover sits on. The gasket i have is thick enough but i do not believe it is tough enough. Would love to find some nice rubber gaskets like they use on automotive valve covers and camshaft covers...even if its just a roll a material that i can cut to shape what i need.

I bought the variety pack and used the thickest cork gasket material. It was only 7.99 at Advance or Oriely's. I never had a leak since. I did not do any mods to the engine. It was running strong before it started to stall. Then it woudn't crank and when I tried, oil was spilling out of the crankcase cover like something broke. Now I am having a small leak from the right side but I can't tell if it is coming from the tach or exhaust heads... one thing after another.

sounds like a blocked engine breather to me.
Check the rubber pipe that comes off top of cylinder head and make sure it isnt crushed, blocked or trapped anywhere.

PJ
yeah definately check that

That is funny because I took off the breather tube to install run some new fuel lines right before this happened. I will give that a check. Thanks...

Find anything definitive yet??

Nope, I got the bike to iddle by adjusting the carbs and installing pods (my filters were really dirty). I also managed to take her for a little spin but after awhile, it ending up stalling again. I pulled the plugs and the left side is perfect but the right side is black and I mean black? So no, I have not figured anything out yet.

you have them both adjusted near the same?

Yep, they are both adjusted the same. There is a small exhaust leak coming from the right manifold so it might have something to do with it.
