Opened up my valve cover on my CB360 to check on the cam chain tensioners and have a general look see. Anyways i think it's pretty gnarly:
1) The cam chain guide was broken (the peg looking thing that seats in the top anyways) with the metal core exposed, looks like it did some damage to the seat? Im going to buy a replacement set, but am I going to have a problem with that seat?
2) The bolts that were supposed to be under the breather cover were non-existent, and the opposite face (the surface that the camshaft sits against) looks pretty wrecked. Is it because the bolts were not there and it was too loose? Or is this an oiling issue?
1. The inside of that head looks pretty dirty. Not sure why but maybe something rubbery burnt up in there?
2. Hate to say it but that cam and head looks toast, unless it used bearing shells and the surface underneath the bearing is ok.
I would suggest looking for a replacement. Hopefully the top/bottom of the head are not a matched pair and you can just buy the head, cam and rockers. Otherwise your going to be looking at a whole top end including barrels.
Chances are if your head looks like this, it would be a smart idea to check your entire top end while its winter and you have it apart. good news is that cb360 parts are everywhere...including full engines that may be fine. find what you need for cheap and source it off this site and eBay. theres tons of 360 guys on here, crazy PJ is on point with all that stuff and probably can point you in a better direction than me. is the bike for you, or a project or what?
Thanks guys! Ending up just finding NOS/Gently used cylinder head, valve cover, camshaft, and rockers arms. Having the cylinder head resurfaced/valves cut etc then should be good to go!
Problem solved. I had to buy 3 complete heads on my CB to end up with a useable option. Time and previous owners are not kind to some of these machines.
That's the common damage with 360s, that's what happens when you don't tighten the cam chain when you are supposed to and change oil/ keep it topped up when you are supposed to.
Its also really good practice to start the bike on center stand and let it idle a couple minutes before hammering the throttle as well, top ends take a minute to get oil up there, the cams are splash fed from those tubs so if they are not full you can trash them really quickly.
All kinds of mods that you can do to make that somewhat go away, I drilled that center bearing on my 360 for an oil feed which does help it. Honda made provisions for drilling it but for some reason didn't. CrazyPj has some stuff in his build thread about drilling the cam to pressure feed it.
