Old Member. Old Bike. Finally Started.-77' CJ360T--PICS!!!

duggyb

where are the skis?
Well I have owned this bike since October of 2010(paid $200 for what you see in the first few pics after I cleaned it up), put about 1000 miles on it and last spring I took it apart to change a leaky o ring on a head stud and head gasket. While it was apart I bought another project car(1994 Nissan Silvia S14, Right Hand Drive). So since i was soaking money into that, the bike got put under a tarp and all parts in a container never to be touched until about 2 weeks ago. A buddy messaged me on Facebook and said he wanted a bike, I happen to find a guy selling a 1973 CB750 running with a spare parts bike(almost complete) and a ton of parts. This re sparked my interest and what started as a head gasket and o ring has now turned into a bit more.

I am still not sure on the definitive style of the bike, part Cafe, Part brat style. etc.

Finished goal is a flat seat/satin.rough finish style bike but with clip ons,etc

Also Ordered a 4 Cell Antigravity, went with the small one because the CJ series had no electric start option so I Dont need much.

Thanks guys! I am busy with work this weekend and next week but the long weekend after that I hope to be putting in some time on it assuming my parts get here on time!

Thanks guys! There is not many of these Cjs around i don't think. I should have kept mine original maybe but it is nice to start with a running bike. I also appreciate how light and minimal the Cj bikes are with drum brakesall around and no electric start etc. I do wish iit had the 6 speed transmission though!

You need to put something back into rear section of frame, you cut out too many cross pieces.
Nice looking CJ tank, you not going to destroy stock paint? (or is it dented in the 'usual place' - top left front )
6 speed is over rated, I converted one, doubt if it was worth the effort

Sorry i should have mentioned i am getting a hoop bent right now that will end where those yellow paint markings are. So that is a nice small seat and should cap off the structural integrity nicely. Also the tank is muchh more beat up now that it has been banging around my basement for a couple years and yes it has the famous dent. Good to know on the 6 speed

Its looking great. I dont know this for a fact but, I think the gearing in the 5 speed may come out about the same as the 6 in the end. as in both bikes will be about the same rpm at the same speed once you reach the top gear.
OR.
am I wrong on this PJ? Sonreir?

So in reality you may simply do less shifting for virtually the same result.

She looked museum ready to start. I loved that muffler.

Some of the gear ratio's are exactly the same, I could check but I think there is a wider jump between 1 - 2 and 4 - 5?
ytop gear is exactly the same internal ratio on both

Early model CB and CL have a shorter first and second. Late model 360 gears are all the same except that the CJ has a different final drive and the CB/CL have a 6th gear.

Sooo, I am kinda right then? same rpm same speed in the end.

Assuming 9000 RPM redline (and enough power to hit it in top gear), the CB/CL is good for 90.4 MPH in 6th gear and the CJ will do 93.4 in 5th.

Any chance of hitting the TON? what gearing would i need to look at?, when i do my swing-arm bushings and such i am going to be replacing chain and both sprockets.

Thanks

I have a 17 tooth front and stock 34? rear. She is doing 5000 rpm @ 70mph in 6th. She hits 85 pretty easily. But Im not sure of the rpms. 85 is too scary for me, so I always have my eyes closed.

I know 85 is a looong way from 100, but, Weather permitting this evening, Ill try to find out tonight. What her rpms are at 85. (I cant imagine much over 7000)

Ive completely rebuilt her engine, but I didnt do any "power" type mods, just heavy duty clutch springs.

I hit 100mph in my 2008 Honda Fit a couple years ago. I will never try that again. It was scary also, and it probably took 1+ mile to get from 90 to 100.

103.8 MPH if you rev her up to 10,000 RPM.

Swapping from a 16t to 17t front sprocket will get you to the ton at 9070 RPM.

well the gearing is going to get put on hold until i get it running.

Sorry for not posting in awhile, ended up running into some worse issues with the engine than i would have liked to. but thanks to ADC and others who reccomended doing the base gasket. they were caught before they turned into bigger problems.

after pulling apart my cylinders to do the base gasket i found one had rusted in and left marks. so off to the machinist it went and got a fresh hone, stoneground gasket surfaces and glass bead blasted pistons, as well as i ordered new rings, and he tested ring end gap. everything checked out and I began assembling the motor today

Also in the past few weeks my DCC order showed, so I got my clip ons on and some of the handlebar accessories, I also lowered the front end of the bike(dont flame for this I know its not functional and understand the bike will handle worse.) Some other new things is I got shorty shocks to lower the rear from a buddy for $40 and I lowered my headlight/gauges 2.5 inches on top of what they dropped with the tree.

IMG_20130824_111709.jpg

I also purchased a "kohler" style voltage regulator to run the new anti gravity battery at a more consistent rate. And my buddy has my fuse box and he is updating it to standard ATC style fuses as the glass JAP ones are hard to find around me.
