Here is the tank I am intending to fit. I've just placed it on top of the seat for the purpose of photograph
as it won't sit any further flush till I make some cuts and welds to seat in the bungs properly.

One thing I noticed however, was I liked the way the seat detail went under the tank.

as appose to sitting flush...(I know the tanks not level on this pic - as I said I can't get the left side any lower at the moment till I accomodate for the bungs)

So my question is, do you think it looks slightly stupid raised off the frame about an inch as appose to sitting flush?
if I do go this route It will not be as high as in the photos, but will be hovering above the frame slightly.

This gap in the rear of the tank will need to be filled somehow if I decide to do this -

Probably pack the seat out a little more. I will have to attatch the seat by sliding it in forwadly also
and locking it somehow and lose the hinges because the hinge setup wont allow me to get the
detail of the seat sitting under the tank.

WOW.. thats a nice tank... is that a 10 gallon???.. Its huge!!... you can ride from west coast to east cost on one fill up!!.. ;D
Its so big that it has its own atmosphere.. Its own gravity force!!.. LOL....

OK.. I think as it is in the pic, it sits a bit high. It needs to be a bit lower...sitting level with the frame... You dont want 10 gallons of fuel swishing around that tank, especially if its sitting so high...

you might want to consider some rearsets... You'll be sitting so far back due to the tank that the stock position of the shifter & brake might be rather uncomfortable...

Looks like you'll have to cut your seat pan about 3 inches...
why not cut your seat pan, then bolt the piece you just cut off to the frame, so that theback end of the tank can rest on that piece flat...
Of course you are gonna have to put foam or soemthing to help with the vibration so that the alloy tank doesnt crack...

Cheers Leon, Not sure of the capacity, but it is huge ;D

I did wonder whether a little too big at first, but it's kinda growing on me, it's a custom jobby that was on an old TriBSA.
It has two petcocks.. do you reckon the fuel will flow ok If I use the secong petcock routed to the otherside of the bike passed
the carbs? otherwise I might need that capacity to just use one side ;D
I've been looking out for some Tarozzi rearsets, there dopesent seem to be many stockists in the UK

Interesting tank. I don't think I've ever seen one like that with the sharp features at the front. It would look pretty wicked with a "boxy" style seat tail like the 60's Dunstall seats.

What do you reckon?

*Edit* Oops just realised That wasent a dunny seat but a harley.

That's the right position for the tank - seat should be cut to sit behind it. The seat you have is a good style for an alloy tank. I'd then trim the 'sidecovers' down a bit - they likely don't need to extend all the way to the bottom of the triangle. Move the electrical if you can/want to and put rearsets on it.

I agree with Tim's suggestion about trimming the sidecovers; lop off the bottom half of each one, and open up that midsection a bit. You could mock up some new ones in white cardboard (or ANY cardboard, then paint it white), to see what it would look like. In my ignorant opinion, the sidecovers you're using now are just overwhelming the sides of the bike, due to the huge expanse of blank sheetmetal.

You could make them the same size (top-to-bottom) as the gas tank, which I think would introduce some proportion, and a more rational perspective to the overall effect on the appearance of the motorcycle. That way, each (white) panel (each side of the gas tank, and the sidecovers themselves) would look balanced to one another, without overwhelming the eye... I may seem to be just a simple ignoramus, but you can't deny that I'm an OPINIONATED ignoramus...

Hope this makes sense; if not, let me know, and I'll think about changing my meds...

MAN, that is a LOOOONNNGG reach; looks like a real nut-crusher. I know damn well I couldn't ride like that...

You might want to switch to Bikemaster Superbike bars, which are lower than stockers, but not as extreme as clip-ons or clubmans... I've mentioned them in more detail in other threads. If you're determined to use the clubman-type bars, I'd sell that tank here on DTT and find something better suited to your needs.

Hope you're not planning on fathering any children...

Does anyone think it looks too big?
No.... I think your arms are too short :D. Those sporty riding boots are pretty distracting ;). I'm not sure how narrow the tank is at the front but you probably have a bit of room to pull your clip ons back.

Those sporty riding boots are pretty distracting .

Aren,t they the latest in heel and ankle protection as the grey bits are kevlar lined... ;D
it may not look so uncomfortable if you put your feet on the passenger pegs to give you an idea of rearsets.
It does look pretty big though, imagine that sucker when its full of fuel!!!

I think it looks good. Like others said, try putting your feet on the passenger pegs, or somewhere in between. Can the tank slide any further forward than in your pic? In the pic its on top of the seat still?

That tank is wild.
You look tiny on that bike (no offence of course... maybe I should say the bike looks huge?)...

I'd say you can make it work, but as of now I think you're stretching your back out too much to enjoy riding the bike.

i would try to close some of the gap between the engine and the tank and maybe go forward a little more. it is big, but it could work.

Few things:

  • The bike is on center stand, which is why its looking too high and big, and seems like your legs wouldn't reach the ground.
  • Try taking a pic with your legs on the rear footpegs. Its more or less the position where you'd be making your rearsets.
  • You could also try taking your handlebar lower, that was it would come more closer to you.
