Oscar's Sr250 build

Hi all!

I have recently come into possession of a mates sr250 1980 build. I currently have no idea which parts go where and am in need of help for this build.

As you can see there isn't much there at the moment though there are a few particular parts I need help with sourcing such as a new front end! (front wheel has a rust hole and stanchions need re-chroming so I'm thinking I might just update the whole front end). Any suggestions as to which bikes I can source with a disk front and and is easily retrofitted to the sr250.

I also have purchased a nice carbouretter for it too :) TM33 Mikuni. Can't wait to fit this bugger and get her going. Though I need to replace to wiring loom first, which is a mess!

check the link in my sig for my 250 build. Lots of tanks can fit if you can weld. Rearsets from some SR400/500 aftermarket places will fit. The front forks from anything can be made to fit, that's the beauty of metal. I'd go to the breakers and find an SR400/XS400 front end and find a way to make yourself happy.

I know where there is a perfectly good set of forks that would cost a mint to get shipped to you (I assume nowhere near Canada lol) but might be had for the right price. Your location is?

Ask away, I seem to remember where most of the stuff went/goes on my bike lol.

Thanks for the help! Though I am in Australia ;) so postage would be astronomical! I will try and source stuff locally...hopefully.

This is my first adventure into modifying motorcycles too. Any tips for a motorcycle noob?

A few electronic parts have arrived. I just have to wire in the starter solenoid and see if she kicks over. Not before a once over though. I also have to source a few bolts that aren't fitting correctly around the engine casing.

Are you wondering if its seized? You can connect a battery ...positive to the starter and negative ground to the head....and the starter will spin the motor

I thought she was seized as the bikes been sitting for about an year and a half, but she turns over by hand when you roll the stator, I also dropped some oil down on to the piston to lube it up and for a smokey start!

Does anyone have the torque specifications on the head bolts? Also any clue how to set the cam timing and proper cam chain tension. the manuals online are dodgy at best, so I was wondering if anyone has some personal experience?

I transferred the triple clamp and forks from an '82 XS400 Seca to my SR250. Bolted right on.

Also used the rear wheel from the XS400. The spacing and axles size was the same, so it bolted right on too. I just had to weld a bracket on the swing arm for the brake arm and get a 520 rear sprocket. The XS400 has a 530 chain.

Follow the links in my signature to see photos of my SR250.

Just an update. Still quite a bit to do. It is running now which is awesome!

Re lacing front rim

And painted tank.

Also will be replacing the rear rim. Thought I might get and 17" rear rim. Does anyone know how you go about sourcing the correct spokes for that sized rim? I want to go this way as I want to run a more aggressive tyre on the rear.

Also did a test fit of all the parts. This is before I re-painted the tank. And before I tore the rims off because the front one had a rust hole and the rear had the chrome bubbling.

Just an update on my progress.

Looking great so far man. Where did you end up with this project? Where was the seat from?
The seat I got from ebay my friend!

Soo I have been busy between uni, work and this project over the last few months and now the bike is almost ready for roadworthy pending wiring and carby tuning.

I will start here with the front forks.
When I got the bike and as you can see from earlier pictures they were corroded quite badly.

I have since polished them up and re-hardchormed and resealed these buggers.
pre assembly

post assembly

I also decided to take the wheels into my own hands by aquiring new spokes and rims and brushing up the old hubs and re-spoke and true them up ;) the only thing I out sourced was getting the front hub machined a bit for safety.

pre service.

during service

post service.

and other tidying up..

I have decided not to go with a looped rear end as everyone has that look. so I decided to keep it nice and short and modern.

And a teaser shot before i sort out these problems, and get it registered then I will get some suitable shots done.

Really nice work with the forks and the wheels man. I see a lot of time invested there and its paid off ;)

Thanks, yeah those pics don't include half of the resto either!

Very nice.

What did you have machined on the front hub? Curious because of my own SR.

I had the front drum brake machined so the pads seated better. It was fairly horrible because it had been sitting for over a year. Stops almost as good a my disk brake bike now.

I'm having timing or leak problems with the head. The carby keeps back firing when revving and when I give it some throttle it just decelerates.

Does anyone have any pictures of their timing at TDC so i can check it with mine?

Also not sure if it is the inlet valve leaking :/

Magneto cover off and cam cover off, at TDC the timing marks should line up. It's dead easy on this thumper.

If it's backfiring a bit then yeah, you might have some valve leak. Once I rebuilt the top end it stopped doing that backfire bang when starting.
