Outride a Crisis - Honda CB450

Re: Project restart CB 450

Thanks for the comments guys.

I'm using a 60 gallon air compressor. 11 cfm at 90psi, 3.something HP.

It does the job really well.

Re: Project restart CB 450

Sounds likes the Craftsman unit. I am looking to get a tank with more volume, why I ask. That should do the trick.

Re: Project restart CB 450

Following this one!
Nice job on the polishing, looking forward to seeing what happens here.

Re: Project restart CB 450

Getting some work done. I installed new bronze bushings in the swingarm, and attached the swingarm to the frame.

I'll post pics soon.

I also polished up the seat latch mechanism! It's a tiny detail, but that's what I like. Details are everything.

Re: Project restart CB 450

Hi again. Gotten some work done and will post pics soon, but first a question.

Does anyone know what this is?
It's under the steering stem on the frame. It's two ears with bolt holes and a bolt going through it that has two washers and a nut on it.

Re: Project restart CB 450

So I got some new bronze bushings for the swingarm pivot and I put those into place. Removing the old bushings was the second hardest job I've had to do on this bike so far. After a few hours, they were installed and good to go.

I also rebuilt the rear brake with new springs and shoes, and finished putting the motor mounts on.

Later I mocked up the gas tank to see how it would look with the motor installed. I mocked it up a long time ago and couldn't really remember if it looked good or not. The lines of the CB350 tank really work well with the 450. I'm really happy with it!

And this is the proper way to hand off nuts and bolts, FYI.

It's still coming together. I've been a bit sidetracked because the warm weather is here in MA and I'm repainting my Bonneville, and spending some time working on my Z3. I've also got people hitting me up for work all the time now. I have a really small business of sorts where I beadblast or polish parts for people for motorcycles or cars or whatever. I've done a lot of woodworking equipment and stuff too.

Here's a shot of the last job I just finished. It's an engine case for a CRF450 Honda that a cool kid is turning into a supermoto!

Re: Project restart CB 450

So today, being rainy and cold in Massachusetts, I spent some time in the garage installing my headlight and brackets. This job, which would appear to take 20 minutes, was actually a three hour process. This was because the clamps I had for the forks were basically useless until I reshaped them into P-Clamps using a vise, deadblow hammer, and a really great pair of pliers. Fun stuff.

The headlight shell is an old CEV headlight shell that's become kind of popular on vintage builds, and it's been powder coated the same Dark Blue Pearl as the frame. It will have a tachometer installed in the opening when I find one that fits.

So in case anyone was following this -

I've been working steadily on the Honda, but my time has been split between a whole shit ton of other... shit.

As is the case with everyone, I assume, life is organic and ever-changing without paying mind to a man's projects (I'm slow).

After starting this bike maybe 3 years ago, I'm finally getting to a point where things are clicking back together.

I've also been reworking my Triumph which can be seen at the top of this thread as a blue Bonneville, then a red and white Thruxtonated Bonneville, and now as an Eclipse Grey more intensely sporty Bonneville... Whatever that means.

Here's a picture.

Here's a tank badge everyone but me hates!

And then I was lucky enough to win a trophy. I blame the new paint.

So that's my main bitch. Here's where I'm at with the 450.

Recent work was to clean up the front end. Decided to go with clip ons, like everyone else, so I shaved the top triple tree and attached the speedometer on the frame for a little wackiness.

I cleaned up the hand controls and junk and those were attached to the tarozzi clip ons last night. I'll post some more pictures soon.

I just wanted to get this thread going so that I can keep moving and stay motivated!

Thanks guys.

Believe me I know that feeling!

Small update and a question :

Put on the Tarozzi Clip Ons that came in the mail and attached the left side lever and controls.

New rear brake switch and I had to splice together the dongle for the charging system. I'm preeeetty sure I got the right wires together...

8001529290_5cb5c78547_z.jpg

I painted the battery box just a satin black because it will be hidden behind the side covers and seat. It looks clean and is rust free, so that's good!

8001529932_3055a62d62_z.jpg

So this is where I need some help.

I removed the cable going to the starter motor from the solenoid and atached the solenoid and rectifier back on to the battery box. From that solenoid, doesn't that large red cable go to the positive post on the battery? If so, what is the other large red cable that has a (potentially aftermarket??) fuse box attached to it?? I'm trying to get the electrics sorted, but this is NOT my strong suite.

8001529632_0b28d2664f_c.jpg

Please help. Thanks!

Oh, I also resto-modded this planer.

8001528137_ee52f604ed_z.jpg

BLUE circled connection should go under the cable on the relay right there. SIDE TO THE BATTERY.

Fuse box should go in the holder right there marked in red. I RECOMEND cutting it out and splicing in a nice blade holder like this http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=070-675&utm_source=googleps

THERE should also be a ring terminal on a small gauge wire that will connect to the NEGATIVE side of the battery marked in green.

You mean there should be a smaller ring terminal coming from the fuse box? or somewhere else? You're not talking about the major negative cable that connects to the frame, right?

Sorry, I'm really trying here and I appreciate the help!

If I don't have a starter, is it possible to just remove that whole solenoid at the terminals where it connects to the main harness?

If you are not running a starter take that relay OUT. Hook that red wire right to the battery.

The ring terminal I'm talking about is a ground, might be on a green wire that I see sticking out of the harness above the red wire. If you lay the harness back along the bike where it is supposed to be it should line up right next to the battery.

Took me forever to figure out where it went when I rewired my bike.
