Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank (Finish Pic)

Hi All,
Just read a bunch on the rattle can sticky and now have a couple of questions.
I am getting ready to to paint a Greeves Griffon glass fibre gas tank with Duplicolor Metal Specks Ocean blue metalflake from a rattle can. I then intend to finish it with the Spraymax 2k clear. So, can 2k be used over the Duplicolor, and if so I assume that I would not sand the base coat at all because of the flake? Am I correct and if anyone has tips before I do I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

Yes, I've used 2k over Duplicolor and it works great. Not sure about sanding the flake as I've never tried flake before.

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

John I used duplicolor metal specs and wheel paint on the CX and didn't sand before the 2 k and it came out amazing. I didn't even cut and buff after the clear and it is like glass. Wear a proper respirator etc.

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

Ok great thanks. I think I'm heading in the right direction then! Is the mask in the picture ok to use for spraying? Oh and do you have an pics or a link to your CX tank?

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

What are the cartridges made for?

You'll want one specifically for vapors.

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

Have used the SprayMax 2K over both DUplicolor rattle can and also their paintshop lacquers with excellent results, both on metal and 'glass. Have also tried the Eastwood Automotive brand of 2k high gloss. Acceptable results with the Eastwood, but IMHO, the Spraymax lays down better and has a higher degree of gloss to it.

SImply look for mask cartridges rated for use with organophosphate pesticides and you'll be good. Even more protection would be to use a disposbale paint suit, as those vapors can be absorbed thru the skin, too. Needless to say, plenty of ventilation is a given.

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

My mask looks like that but it's the cartridges that matter. I only spray the 2k outdoors, I get setup when the weather is good then use the stuff, leave it long enough to kick then move it inside. to finish cure as after it is sprayed the odors are pretty much gone, it is almost odor free. During spraying and drying is the bad part. http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=43617.405 pics of tank

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

Ok thanks guys. I will be spraying outside under and easy up (should be plenty warm enough here in Cali). I will look at Home Depot for the correct cartridges for my mask and I will be wearing a set of coveralls. Hoping to do this sometime next week :)
Here is a pic of the tank as it sits.

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

as others have said, spraymax will spray nicely over the duplicolor.....but def don't sand the color as that will show in the metal flake....just get the clear on within the re-coat window when you're spraying it. Usually 15-30mins after color you can lay your clear.

Good to know that there is a window for laying the clear! What about if I left the tank for a week or so with the base coat on to fully cure could I then go over it with clear? I was planing to put decals on before I clear coat, will that be ok?

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

That will be fine and the time frame depends on the paint, some lacquer based have a 0 window, anytime re-coat and enamels can be 7, 10, 14 or 24 days if you miss the first window. I used the metal specs orange and the gunmetal wheel and it was painted, striped with vinyl, and cleared all in a weekend without issues.

I wouldn't wait that long because you will have to scuff the base for it to take the clear by then.....I've done decals before clear within the window a few times....you just have to be really good at not getting wrinkles in it because you only get one chance.

this is a tank I posted in the rattle-can thread.....Duplicolor universal gloss black rattle can with 2K catalyzed urethane clearcoat over it. decal is under the clear.

I sprayed the black, waited about 30mins, threw on some rubber gloves, and placed the decal where I wanted it using very small tears off my masking tape (the body-shop stuff won't stick enough to take your fresh paint with it when you peel it off). Then I pulled the backing off the vinyl with the paper covering still holding the decal from the top and eased it down onto my tank before I pulled the paper covering and masking tape off. Then I used a blow-gun on low pressure to make sure there was no dust on the tank and laid the clear very misty and thin for the first 2-3 coats so it wouldn't run off the vinyl.

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

Thanks for the info. Holy cow if mine comes out half as good as that i'll be happy ;)

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

Here's a cb350 I did this past spring using the Metal Specks and SprayMax. Really liked the way the Metal Specks went on. Put some decals on, then cleared over it all. Done within two days over the weekend.

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

Thanks for those pics! Good to see what the blue actually looks like. I hope mine comes out that well. My tank was originally blue metalflake which I think was in the gel coat.

Re: Paint and 2K Clear? On Fibre Glass Gas Tank

Ok peeps I know this isn't the tank but I did a test on my airbox with the spray can flake. I just used some Dupli-Color clear over it but it came out great. I will still use teh 2k clear on the tank.

Holy shit....that colour looks fantastic, and the finish looks very smooth! Well played!

Did you follow the 'rattle can bling' thread, or did you have another method? I need to respray my bike in the near future because I screwed my first pain job up haha

I followed it to some degree but I didn't ponce about doing all those cleaning steps and I sanded the primer with 320 between coats then the final primer coat I sanded with 320, 600 and 1000. I am sure the tutorial is the way to go but as mentioned I did cut come corners that being said I am totally happy with the result. That 2K clear is brilliant stuff just a bit expensive. :)

sorry i´m pretty sure you already posted which product you used for that great blue metallic?
i´m planning on using the same color and shooting some 2K spray max over it.
