Paint costs?

Been Around the Block
What is a range for price to have tank, side covers and top of forks shot? A place that turns out work without defects, but still below what is required for a show bike.

I was quoted $180 for my tank (CB350) in a black base/clear from a shop nearby that does a lot of rectification work for car dealers. i.e. OE paint quality, not show. I'd figure on the order of $250-300 of they added other pieces.

The problem is that paint prices vary so wildly that your best bet is to actually shop around (and look at their work while you're there).

I had my award winning (Best Asian Bike at the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Show) done a few years ago, all OE, and hand painted pin stripes, fork covers, and side covers, $980 Canadian. here is the tank.

Beautiful, so that should be around top end then right? I mean that looks like a killer job and all parts I would have painted on a CB.

Yep top of the line. thanks, and I am glad you like it. on the other end of the spectrum I had a tank painted midnight black, $225 Canadian.

Very. But it was done by an automotive body shop not a bike paint shop. Once you go to a bike paint shop, everyone wants to be an artist, and think they should be paid like a dead one.

I will probably go that route if I start a project, have an auto bodyshop painter spray it in his booth after his workday ends.

Ya i was quoted 300 cad for just the tank prepping of my base and clear.

That inspired me to continue trying to paint myself and I am getting better.

I do have gear, just not a booth. I don't know, there is just something about having that perfectly sterile environment to shoot in that makes it seem worthwhile to me. Well at least closer to the 300 side of things, the 1000 is another story.

If that's the case I would talk your local body-shop and ask how much if you do the prep work. Strip, fill any dents and bring him the tank in primer. Be sure to ask him what materials he wanted you to use, that way all he would have to do is the final sand and shoot the color base / clear coats. Might be surprised as to how much all that labor would knok off the price or find it not be worth it and let him do it all so you would not have to worry about it.

That or many places rent booths.
