Painting pipe wrap?

Useful Idiot

Been Around the Block
It seems like I saw a comment about painting wrapped pipes here, but I could be crazy? Are you supposed to paint your wraps? I wrapped my pipes (my 1st time doing so) and didn't paint them. Just soaked them in water and had a buddy help. Oil always gets on the left pipe when I take the cover off etc.

Is there some sort of high temp clear paint for this or am I hearing/reading things wrong?

You should paint your wraps with some high temp paint! I am not sure about clear, I just read a post from goodfornothing where he said his clear paint discolored on his wrap. If you like them white though, why not paint them with high temp white paint!

I'll tell ya what I did on my pipes. I put them on using the method you described with the water. After a few days of running the bike when the wrap stopped smoking, I removed the exhaust and cleaned the wrap a bit. Then I sprayed the wrap with Krylon Bar B Q and Grill paint. The paint is good to 1200 degrees and it has worked out nicely. Two cans should do it and lay it on heavy. Less than 10 bucks for the two cans. The Krylon paint only comes in black, but other companies make other colors in 1200 spray paint. After about a year it has started to fade a bit so I'll need to respray it soon.
Here are the pipes after I painted them.

And here they are now:

Now that I looked at this, I'm gonna have to paint them again. :-\

You can paint them but make sure you use VHT or something that dan withstand heat more than 1200 degrees. I used some cheap high heat clear and it turned my whitnpipes into a yellowish red. It looks like I spilled Tabasco on my pipes haha. I'll be spraying them black some time though.

I think you should go back with white dude, it matches the rest of your white bits!

You know what? I think I will! But just out of curiosity, what do you think about orange pipes ;)?

I've painted the wraps on my 83 Suzuki black but I left the wraps on my 68 Honda plain. Whenever I did the Suzuki, I wrapped the pipes while the wrap was wet, let it sit for about a day with a fan blowing on them (to help dry them out), then I painted them black (I beleive it was a high temp silica paint) with the pipes off the bike. After soaking them with paint, waited another day before putting them back on. Here's the part somebody would have told me - they smoke like crazy for the next couple times they get hot! Looked like the bike was on fire every time I came up to an intersection.

So when I wrapped the Honda I didn't want to paint them, just leave it natural. But you can see where the wrap has contacted oil, cleaning chemicals, etc. I've never heard of a high temp clear coat. Any body else saw one?

I know that VHT makes high temp clear.
Its available through Summit Racing / other catalogues.
I believe its satin finish, but it works well.

edit: just found the pic:

Thanks KaChunk for looking that up for me and conributing to my laziness! Maybe I'll get some of that clear coat now to seal in all the oil-stained goodness.

And ForceFan - if I ever see you pushing a Honda I'll be sure to honk and wave since I know you wouldn't want a ride! ;D
