Painting Spokes and Trueing wheels

THE FOLLOWING IS A NOOB QUESTION:

So I hear people tape off the end of the spoke that touched the rim of the wheel so they can true it. Would you still be able to true your wheels if you paint the spoke ends? I'm guessing you can, people just tape it off so it won't scratch. Is this right?

Clearance between spoke nipple and spoke wrench is very small. A good coat of paint will close up the clearance. Tape your nipples.

plus if you don't you will for sure chip the paint off when you true them.
