Permatex Copper RTV as Copper Crush Exhaust Gasket Replacement?

manualofman

i always wind up with extra bolts leftover..
A couple weeks ago I gave my buddy a hand on putting a new Delkevic slip on muffler onto his SV650. He left me the tube of Permatex Copper RTV that we used to seal up the joint (from instructions).

Now, I took the mufflers off my CB450 to clean them up and am putting them back on soon. I'm wondering if I have to order up some new copper crush gaskets, or if I can use this Permatex Copper RTV stuff. I don't see why not, unless the copper crush gaskets also take up some space between the pipe and muffler ID/OD's.

It seems like this RTV is just a newer version of these traditional gaskets, especially since newer muffler manufacturers recommend using it.

Anybody use this method?

the precision of old honda exhaust joints isn't as good as newer stuff, the rtv was probably filling .010" gap when the muffler was on, the crush gaskets are meant to fill larger gaps you'll find on old stuff
