Points plate cb360

renslow

Been Around the Block
So i've just reinstalled new points/condenser on my old 360 and now i cant get the timing right for my left cylinder. I need to turn the points plate COUNTER clockwise but im unable to move it for some reason. It has a verrry very small amount of movement to adjust and this is something that i've never had a problem with.

I've taken the cover off and tried rotating it on the cam to a new position but i get the same results. Is there a correct way this bad boy is suppose to be sitting?

Is there a correct way the points plate should be set? I can't move the point plate enough. It has a really small amount of movement that i didnt have before. Ah i have no idea what happened with this. Always a new issue with this bike, can anyone help me out with this?

The points plate should be able to rotate 360°, providing the wires aren't caught on something. Check all the screws and make sure there isn't anything binding.

It only wants to sit flush in one position. I have no idea why this is happening still. None of the screws are pushing against it and the wires arent even an issue. Any ideas? Whats making it only sit flush in one spot?

Pull the points plate off entirely and check out the advancer that sits behind it. It sounds like that could the be problem. The advancer has a notch which fits over the pin on the cam and so it only really fits on one way. The plate should spin freely over the advancer.

I have not touched the advancer unit that sits behind the points plate. I had the bike running moneeey just a bit ago untill i put new points on the bike and now this is my problem. I'm so lost with this gah
:'(

Lightly sand the edges of the points plate. Might be a burr or something it's hanging up on.

Just the way it 'falls' into place it seems like that wouldnt fix the problem. I can only get the slightestt slightest movement when its sitting flush. I cannott cannot get it to advance or retard anymore when 'forcing' it either. The advancer unit has never been taken off the bike so i dont see the need to pull it off to see if somethings wrong with it. Everythings clean! When the bike was running prime, the points plate was 10-15 degrees CCW from the position it is now and i cant get it even closee to where it was.

Shitty! I'm having a mechanic come check it out tomorrow so ill update this thread when the problems fixed incase somebody else runs into this problem. dotheton thanks again for the input! i'd be lost without this place.

NEW ISSUE!

So the problem with the points plate i still dont know why it only sits flush in one spot. I ended up getting the timing set by just 'forcing' it to sit flush by burring the screws in. Great! So now the bike hauls ass when its cold but when it starts to warm up while riding itll start firing on one cylinder and i get stuck trying to limp it home.

What could cause this? It seriously runs money when the bikes cold, snappy throttle, solid power band etc. I'll ride it for less then 10 minutes and then it'll start to fire on one cylinder.

The bike wants to die when this happens and it takes a while for it to kick over again.
