Powder coat or polish CB450 Build!

Hey thanks Brothers for the replies ;D the pipes are finished and wrapped in plastic awaiting the final assembly, unfortunately you'll have to wait to see the final outcome ::) as i finish one part for the scoot from now to the finish i'll put it aside till the end :D Anyway i wanted to do some powder and paint at home so spent some time building a small down draft booth, so now on to other things. ;D the fans are small high flow industrial fans and are "intrinsically safe" ie they won't flash/spark, the air flow volume is not the best (a third fan would be perfect) but for now it will do and not sure of how much flow i want for the powder so, we will see.

what exactly is the purpose of this contraption? Does it simply suck all the floating dust out of the air and away from your paintwork?

In a word, yep ;D the air is directed away from you and down through the floor and filters and then out, the dust is caught and makes painting far easer, reduces overspray and paint dust in any paint job. The lazy Susan table allows the job to be rotated :D and the rail allows jobs to be hung ;D

also Im not sure if I missed it, but was there ever an update on the battery box? And what batteries are those? More specifically what would I look for if I was trying to find something similar?

They're spiral wound lead/tin batteries made by Cylon, not cheep, but, can be separated and place anywhere you like :D in the headlight etc. Mine is almost finished and the mounting is still the same. The starter motor battery is still being made :D

The battery came about when i wanted to use a different battery other than the lead/acid ones. did some research and found that the majority of rechargeable batteries could not stand up to the constant drain and recharge of the bike (or no guarantee).

The lead/acid battery is still the best for the bike as it can dump huge amps quickly and has a fast recharge. in short it can give a lot very quickly and has a small recovery cycle...

So what to use? the Optima range or batteries uses a spiral wound lead/tin battery that has a low discharge rate, ie it can hold it's voltage for a long time, so it is ideal for emergency generators etc. but its down site is that it will not dump its power fast, to start an engine it dumps it power slowly so only good for kick start, which is what i'm using.

You can look into the cordless drill range of batteries 14volt would be great, a mate of mine uses one for his race bike, works well but he doesn't run a charging system on the bike so the battery runs down and need to be recharged. I would look at these batteries and build a small charger for the bike to recharge it. that's my next plan ;D, when i do i'll post the how to!! ;D

That paint booth is a great idea and look really easy to put together. I may have yet another project to stall my build with :p

The tank looks great too. Is that a decal of some sort? could you fill us in on that? looks bad ass.

I built my booth so that it is completely foldable and will fold into the wall... I use it for powder but now that we have the full size shop i am going to convert the vent fan on it and drop a heavy visqueen tarp on the front and use it to lay paint...
here is how i did that. i hinged EVERYTHING so that i can fold it up

I LOVE your booth man!!! love it!!!! such a simple and creative idea! i like the punch board use on the lower level and the fan there, watch your a$$ with a computer fan so that the sucker does not spark and light those fumes though... the lazy susan is a FANTASTIC idea!!!!

I like the stowability of your booth Joe. My buddy is going to let me set up for paint in his garage and that will make it a lot more convenient for him when not in use.

Mate what are you saying, your the king of getting things done and as for creative thinking a foldable booth is the way to go, just love it. The fans are safe they are from a large computer bank the were used to circulate air around 2 huge servers so they move some air!! Thanks and enjoy the summer while it lasts ;D ;D

The tank is a thinking piece :D the decal was made for me buy a friend, i have these ideas and need to see what they look like before i commit to that idea. So the tank has had four different paint schemes and several different decals ;D and I'm still not convinced this is the right way to go, this one looked to copper coloured but i like the diamond patten :D

turned out nice... i typically Hot flock black parts... to do this get the part up to about 275 degrees in the oven... then pull it out and shoot it... it looks like you may have a bit to much air pressure coming out of the gun (orange peel effect) turn down the pressure just a touch... when you flock the part it will start to wet almost right away... get a good coat on it, then stick it back in the oven... you will find that it will wet almost right away... now turn you oven to the cure temp and let it cook... i usually bake for an extra 5 -10 min jsut to ensure a full cure... pull it out and let it completely come to room temp before you touch it... you will see... this will give you GREAT results... also what kind of powder are you using? looks 1000X's better than my first job!

Hey is there a step by step thread on doing your own powder coating using an oven? This looks really interesting and I love the results. Would be cool to try it out. Do you mask off parts before applying the powder? How do you do that when its hot? I don't know much about how the process works. -MBS

basicly it comes down to prep... laying the powder is the easy part! you want about 2 mm of powder on there or you will get run out, fish eyes, and orange peel. the only way to get good at it is to do it... using a household oven is fine, just make sure it is electric not gas... then go to town... to get a good surface ALL MATERIALS have to be blasted... chrome stripped/ paint stripped, then i hit them with a tack cloth and denatured alchole or acitone (depending on what powder i am shooting) run a torch over it... and shoot... watching your part metal temp (PMT) is going to be key to getting a full cure and solid finish. just takes time. our oven is 12x12x12 so it is HUGE... but to get rolling a household oven will work... one thing there is no sub for is a gun... cheap guns suck! spend the money and get a good gun! i use a powder pro gun from eastwood... i love it, we have 3 in the shop... castwell makes some nice guns as well

Well that answers a lot of questions - Thanks.

Where is your oven? My powdercoater has his in the garage and the place STINKS! :)

in the shop... if it stinks it is not being prepped right and there is something on the part burning off... most powder is basicly oderless... it is the accrilics that have a sweet plastic smell a bit when you open the oven... if it stinks something is not being done correctly

you do such amazing work! i wish you lived closer...we could turn out some wild stuff!

Joe you've just got married ;D I don't think it's time to start an internet romance ;D well not just yet anyway.

Mate thanks for the complement, coming from you is praise indeed 8) You could always move to Australia, relax and unwind, go surfing, ride all year on near empty roads, no guns and we even speak American although with an Australian accent :D

Got a bit more done today, MBS, It would be easy to just copy what everyone else is doing, but hey that would be boring ;D but if you like then thanks mate ;)
