PROJECT damn it Battery Carbs finished and calipers bled and repainted

Re: kawi gpz 750 project damn it Update with some pics

Thanks twisted and duke yeah, I probably have ocd. It took some time to get all those welds on that fender it took even longer to get them off. I still have some more to clean up and of course the mounts but its pretty close. I counted shocks last nite and I have 7 of them bad boys on the shelf. I better hurry up and finish this one, so I can start another one before the shelf life runs out on them ;) I'm gonna do some work on the seat tonite.

Re: kawi gpz 750 project damn it Update with some pics

Hello all. I have been working on my seat and my levers this weekend. So far I have drilled and polished my clutch lever and perch. I drilled out my brake lever too but then I noticed it was a little bent no problem I'll give it a little tap tap taparoo well I straightened it alright righton to the floor in two damn pieces duh I felt retarded to say the least. Note to self levers with holes in them are much more fragile then ones without. I need to fix my jigsaw so i can do some more work on the seat. well herees some pics the clutch turned out great.

Better that it breaks now rather than later anyway, right?

The clutch lever looks sweet. Any pics of progress on the seat?

Re: kawi gpz 750 project damn it Update with some pics

I did get my jigsaw working but I came to the conclusion that the subframe needs to be finished first. I cut the bum stop off of the seat and I will make the seat pan out of plywood and basically bolt the bumstop to the back of the plywood seatpan. Then I will put foam on it and wrap it. I will use t nuts embedded in the plywood to attach the bumstop and attach the entire assembly to the subframe. I have made a plate that fits snuggly under the bumstop that needs to be welded on first so I can make everything align. The brake lever probably would not have broken under normal use But it would break if you strike it obviously. I'm thinking of drilling some holes in the clutch perch too.

That's a pretty bad idea IMO. The perch clamps around the bars and is always under stress / tension. Drilling holes in it will weaken it severely.

I would take the broken brake lever as a "sign" in this instance.

I'm all for speed holes but in levers... now a broken brake? How hard have you come on those things in a "OH SHIT!" situation?

Re: kawi gpz 750 project damn it Update with some pics

It would have been fine had i not hit it with a hammer. I may not put one in that spot on the next one. Oh well I put some more in the clutch perch looks cool.

Re: kawi gpz 750 project damn it Update with some pics

You're playing a pretty dangerous game drilling speed holes in essential items for "looks" ::)

I had a buddy who re-built his CBR600 race bike after a minor spill. The brake lever had a few nibbles on it, but looked OK otherwise. He didn't replace it.

Next race he was in a few laps and came to the end of the straight and the braking marker....but no front lever.....

He was OK - but the bike was later sold on a pallet.

Brilliant attention to detail on that fender, can't believe it...

...and now to begin ragging you on the whole drilling thing. Suffice to say I'm not a fan unless its disc rotors, and even then conservatively. With the levers just get aluminum ones, they weigh about nothing anyway. Subframe? Leave as is, go minimalistic fibreglass bodywork with a half-inch neoprene seat pad stuck on if you want weight savings - you've already gone aluminum so its about as light as its reasonably going to get. Safely, anyhow.

I'll stop my rant now, I think I may already have commented along these lines in this thread somewhere (may have been someone else?). If so then I'll look through later and ditch/shorten this. Otherwise...

...keep up the good stuff! - boingk

Re: kawi gpz 750 project damn it Update with some pics

great job,is that front fork fit easy to that frame?or you did some mod.?

Re: kawi gpz 750 project damn it Update with some pics

Damn people how effin hard do you think i need to pull that brake lever. Its a hydraulic master cylinder. I will probably not drill the third hole in it. Boingk I dont know what you are refering to about my subframe. I need to finish welding it together so I can build the seat. I dont really feel like working with fiberglass so thats why im building it out of plywood and covering it. I didn't want just a thin pad as I still have to ride this thing. I did drill some holes in the clutch perch Just a couple nothing, serious I didnt go all the way through. As for the forks. I cut the zx7 stem off flush with the triple clamp. then pressed the gpz stem out of its triple clamp. then pressed it into the zx7 stem then welded the two together. i think everyone needs to go to deviant1's thread and flame him now on his levers.

First thing I did? Checked out Deviant's levers! That's actually pretty funny.

And I think Boingk was referring to a different thread about shaving weight - nothing personal to you. Keep it up man!

Thanks Louie. Good news I got laid off on friday and had an interview today and got the job. I hope it is as good as they say it is. I went out and bought some argon to celebrate. I'm gonna practice on some aluminium i have laying around then get to it. I keep y'all posted.

Re: kawi gpz 750 project damn it Update with some pics

Well I hooked up my welder with some gas and practiced a little on aluminum and got to it. I will try to finish some more tonight and post some pics after i get it all done. I'm not a pro but I dont think its gonna fall apart. I might try to weld that lever back together too.

Re: kawi gpz 750 project damn it Update with some pics

Sorry about riling you up thompsonmx100, didn't mean it to come out harsh or anything. Guess you could call me a bit of a stickler for redundancy and reliability hey? Anyway, good to hear you got the job you were going for - might be in the same position here, just had a medical for something I've got happening and can't wait to get started up with a bit of cashflow again.

Keen to see the welding, I can't even stick weld let alone anything fancy like the inert gas stuff.

Cheers - boingk
