Project peer pressure ADV danger bike!

Thanks fellas!

Got the Dunlop D606 rear, Michelin T63 front combo mounted and balanced yesterday. Also had some motion pro lite-locks put in while I was at it. These were all mounted to the newly built cush drive DR350 rear wheel chronicled above. Holy. Crap. What a difference. Took it on a 75 mile jaunt today. No noticeable difference on the street but in the dirt, where it slipped before now it just digs trenches! Amazing difference. Also went from a 45 rear sprocket to a 47 for a little more grunt down low. Was still able to cruise at 75 with no issues with a full load of groceries and other parts and pieces from running errands today. Total success!

Had to cut a few new spacers on the lathe to centrally locate the wheel as the dimensions are slightly different on the cush hub. Used stainless this time and then used my chain alignment tool to get everything square. Spot on:

Thanks man! And it's easy enough. Takes 30 seconds to have them both off. They're quick release.

Spent the last few days making preparations for our annual Kentucky foray into the Daniel Boone National Forest. I was never really happy with my rear rack and the way it sat on the bike so I started looking at designs for available off the shelf racks for DRZs and DR650s. I use my rear rack a lot during daily duties carrying my cooler for work, picking up groceries (beer), and just general use and I knew I would like something a little wider than what I had. I knew I wanted lots of ways to lash the load so it could adapt to varying situations. It stuck me that I had seen racks that were basically the shape that I wanted and I took a gamble. For $20 shipped I grabbed a front rack from an 80s Suzuki ATV. It shipped and I loved the lines but the size was massive. Started out as about 3 foot by 2 foot in size:

I needed a solid base, and the odd way that the 80s frame was designed meant that I needed to fabricate a custom mount that bolted securely to my frame. I eyeballed the bends in an old set of chopper handlebars that I replaced on a friend's Yamaha XS650 with some drag bars and I noticed a couple of good 45° bends and 90° bends made out of heavy wall 7/8" tubing. The idea struck me that this could make an excellent base so I cut out the bends I wanted and started fabricating.

I did the coping on the mill for good solid mounts for the frame bungs:

Many head scratches later and I had a solid mount made up and powder coated it:

So next I started chopping down the ATV rack to a manageable size:

Once I was happy with the size I built the mounts and made it bolt on to the base. Powder coated it and in the end I am thrilled with my homemade rear rack. Complete with Rok straps!

The fact that you went all the way through and finished out your work with a nice powder coat is a step beyond most folks' dedication to quality work. Awesome looking job.
 
Thanks Matt and SG, I appreciate your compliments! I love the durability of powdered parts and the end result is so much nicer than doing it half way. It was super fun to build.

I'm going to sit on that rack this weekend. Rock strapped in. Gallivanting through the forest. Are you ready?
 
Ha! nice work Kiley, looks factory or like it belongs. Wish I was making the Thaw to sit on it too.
