Project XS850- Never Enough Time

Been Around the Block
So i've been working on this project since last summer and am just now getting around to posting. I'll have to recap in the next few posts with pictures. I got two of these triples for free from a buddy and decided to make a two up riding machine for me and the lady. She has put up with me butchering every seat on every bike a own, save for a RD125 that far too little for two grown ass adults anyway. It started off as pretty much a trainwreck but slowly getting there.

This is the day a rolled them into the garage.
I'll post more once they are uploaded.

Here is a little picture of some ghetto soda blasting results. Literally 15 seconds and 5 bucks in materials to make the gun. I have since bought a pressurized system and am using soda blast media from harbor freight. That system removes paint and dirt like you wouldnt believe.

Good luck on the build! It's true, the 750 tank is full of sex. That bobber looks pretty mean too!

That bobber was my first bike. 80 honda cm400. Hated the way it looked and didnt know what to do with it. So it got chopped. :)

nice bikes. i have the little brother of your 850. a xs750 special. going to be swapping the tank on mine too.

That other stripped down beater is a xs750. I got both of them from a buddy for nothing. :)
Here is a quick result of a quick pass with the harbor freight pressurized soda blaster. This thing is amazing! That is only 20 seconds of work.

Another update here.
Got my seat back from the upholstery shop. They did a great job and the turnaround time was less than a day. Couldnt be happier.

And a pic on the bike.

I also got the engine painted and modified a Triumph Trident air cleaner assembly to fit. Beleive it or not the cylinder spacing is identical on those two triples. Still needs some polishing and touch up, but otherwise done.

Layed down the primer and first color coat on the tank as well. The green is jeep rescue green, its only a small part of the color as most will get painted over with the main color. This color is funky, in every different type of light it looks a different shade.

I'm taking all the wiring inside the frame on this build. A vast departure from my previous builds, but it will pay off. The underseat section you see is what the final product will look like. No battery in weird places, no dangling wires, no ugly airbox, just simple and open. Ballistic battery is under the seat. The igntion is also been under tank for over a year. Once you remove all the garbage on these bikes they are wonderfully simple. :)

Any plans to swap in a different front end? I keep hearing that the offset axle on the XS 750/850 Special was a killer for handling.

That color IS funky. I think it'll turn out great with that darker color over the top of it.

It looks tough. I like it. Never seen a yammie tripple in person. I can't imanige what it would sound like with that header. Thats crazy.

what did you use for your back fender and how did you mount it? i was thinking about doing the same thing with my bike. chucking the plastic and chrom half and half thing and putting in a one piece brushed finished fender.
