Quad exhaust to a 4 into 1... doable? Please help.

I have an 81 cb750c with the original quad exhaust on it. I'm wondering, is it possible to take those four separate exhaust pipes and combine them to make a 4 into 1 that is actually functional and sounds good, and if so, how should I go about lining it all up to work right? My wifes grandpa can do, and teach me how to do, all the cutting and welding that I need done so Im not worried about the work, I just want to know if it would be a waist of time to try. For example is there enough pipe to work with to make that happpen? Whats with the baffles, whats their purpose, in or out? Im trying to make my bike just a fun and functional cafe, I dont need it to look show room perfect nor do I want to drop 400+ for exhaust. Any tips or advice is much appreciated and if you think im asking stupid questions, lol, feel free to tell me, just tell me why they are stupid :) I just want to learn as much as I can and I figured, I got all this exhaust pipe, maybe I can just use this....

Thanks!

maybe I don't fully understand your question, but you want to create a 4 into 1 exhaust (like a kerker pipe or similar) out of the stock 4 into 4 exhaust? If so, I think you would be putting in a tremendous amount of work vs. buying a good used 4 into 1 system. they are out there for a good price. Another thing you might want to check is how solid your current pipes are. I imagine they would have to be pretty clean (rust wise), gotta have a good base to work from.

Much easier to buy them of the shelf.

Oh and baffles not only reduce noise but maximise mid range power, when compared to a straight pipe, by reducing back pressure.

I agree with finding a used system (usually near $200 or under if you get lucky) Making a stock system into a 4-1 would be an insane amount of work, and I almost doubt that it can be done without needing more materials than just the stock pipes. With that said, either give it a try! Or sell your set and with the proceeds, buy what you want.

Thanks for all the replies... that really clarified the questions I was having. I think ill start by looking for some used exhaust and then maybe at that Mac Pipe... but I also don't want to sacrifice power for sound. Would I lose performance or gain performance with the Mac 4 into 1? I still haven't quite decided if I am even going to get rid of the exhaust at all... I would assume it would be bad to remove two of the four baffles just for more sound? That seems like it would be all baffles or no baffles kind of deal.

81CharlieBravo.Get the black Mac and just ride the thing.Don't play around with old junk to save 100 bucks. The Mac should work just fine fron the get go.I have never heard of anybody just taking out half the baffles in a ex system. If you have no idea of what you want how can anyone on this post help you?The Mac would probably give you better MPG.

Its hard to know what I want when I don't know what I can have. I am just wanting to learn what I'm doing and why... not just throw a bunch of stuff on a bike because someone somewhere did it and tells me too. Ill probably go for the Mac since I'm finding it in a decent price range and it sounds good too. Thanks for the help!
