Hey guys i have bought a 1977 Yamaha XS400D from a guy that got it from a friend who got it from a friend in South Carolina... So lucky for me he still had the title and the man that owned the bike in SC signed off on his part of the title. I have also heard that in SC you don't have to have a title transfer notarized!? is that true? If so i think i can fill in my part of the title and take the SC title in my name to the DMV here in North Carolina and they can make me a shinny new North Carolina title in my name! Is all my thinking correct? I have asked alot of people about this and cant find a answer, i haven't wrote any of my information on the title and i may or may not be able to get a hold of the man whose name is on the title now.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks honda53rider

I'm not sure but I think if the guy on the title is the last guy to register the bike, then you are good to go. Probably the best thing to do is go to or call the DMV and ask.

I believe you're correct. As long as you fullfil the requirements of the state you're transfering from you're OK. I registered a bike with a MI title in NC recently without having the title notarized.

I have titled many old bikes here in SC and you do NOT have to have it notarized by SC DMV. SC DMV likes a bill of sale and title with out of state vehicle purchases. I think NC DMV requires a notary. So if you have a SC title in your hand and the sellers signed name fits the name on the title, all you need to do is fill out your info and put whatever price you want to say you paid for the bike and have that notarized before you take it NC DMV. You might want to download a bill of sale from SC DMV, fill it out as the seller and the buyer and sign as the seller and the buyer. Have that notarized and SC Title notarized when you go into the NC DMV. Most DMV's require you to pay the tax on the purchase price before they will issue you a title. Good luck!

Well that's the thing i cant get it notarized if the seller is not there no one in NC will notarized it. They will lose there license. So i cant fib that the guy was there and that stuff so im hoping the NC will honor the fact that you don't have to get the title notarized in SC

So what, you are supposed to bring the person from SC that you bought the bike from to NC to a NC notary? It makes no sense. NC DMV or notary cant expect a seller from a different state to come to NC so the notary can witness the transfer. I would just go to your DMV and ask them exactly how to handle your specific situation. Sometimes when a vehicle is over a certain age it changes the requirements. Good luck!

I don't think it matters what state you get the notary in they just want a notary. I will go ask but as i have said i am 250 miles from my DMV so it will take me some time to get there. I may call but im going through some other stuff and cant find the time ti sit on hold with the DMV for an hour. Thanks for all the help guys i kinda knew there wouldn't be a straight answer but yall have backed up all of my thoughts.

my first 3 vehicles I bought in NC (one in '05 and 2 in '07) and never had them notorized, wasn't tll last year when we got my wifes '81 XS400 that there was a fuss made about the notary... but it wasn't the DMV was the prior owner lol never got to the dmv to see if they'd fuss but I'm sure they would. If it comes down to it, you might have to mail the title back to the prior owner and have them get their signature notarized, that's the only 1 that matters. That's if you trust them to send it back.

Ya i wouldn't be as worried if it was a NC title but since it is a SC title and i have to get it changed to NC. But im hopping to take it up here in the next couple weeks. And just to make shore im right I can take it to any DMV in the state it doesn't have to be one in my county right?

ok i finnoly got time to run by the title place and (YOU DO NOT NEED A NOTARIZED IF THE BIKE IS COMING FROM SOUTH CAROLINA But the one kicker is since the bike is 35 years old it has to be inspected... (They always find a way to get you) So iv got to find out if it is a safety and equipment inspection or if they are just checking the vin #. I was planing on running no turn signals and the high/low switch is broke off so im hoping they don't get me on that.

Just found your post. I had to title my bike trough indemnity bond. that meant license ant theft and safety inspection before titling/ registering. Just time and paperwork but ended up fine. As for turn signals I've heard differently from different mechanics/ inspection stations. I went with the one who said you didn't need them. I asked "what's required to pass NC safety inspection." one guy said "everything originally on the bike." He was out! The other told me 2 good tires, high beam indicator, mufflers, and a speedometer. So he got my $13 and I got an inspected bike.

Hope this helps

Man i love the title shop! Well took it to my local title place and talked to the lady and she said that if i have insurance for the bike i could leave with registration and tag for the bike and be able to ride it on the road. So after a few calls i had insurance for the bike and payed my $68 and she handed me a tag are registration for the bike. Then she said to have the new title sent to me a inspector has to come out and check the vin. So I think im going to wait until I am 100% done before i get the inspector out to see the bike. Because I don't need the title unless i am selling the bike so i can take my time to get the bike done before an inspector comes out and yells at my if any one little thing is wrong.

So it looks like im good to go and i hope this post will help other people that are stuck in the pickle that i was in!
