Hey Guys. Im a Automotive painter so I SHOULD know about this but I dont. I could ask my paint rep but I figured Id ask you all first. Id like to paint a lot of my motor black. Now, Im guessing the best route for me would be ceramic coating which my buddy does for a living on race car exhaust and motors...But I cant do that myself...Obviously powder coating is an option too. But what do you guys do?
well i just painter my exhaust down pipe last week..with a high temp spray paint, it looks just fine...
now most people will tell you to use VHT spay or something like that, good cleaning bone dry, some spay, and your ready,
after i painted the exhaust,i put it on,start the bike for a while, let it smoke, stopped the engine, and wait for some minutes to cool down, did that 3 times and the exhaust looks nice
if there is chrome at were you want to paint make sure you take it of first...i think thats the basics
oh...and mask the parts you dont want to paint
Any high temp engine enamal seems to work fine. The prep seems more important. Find someone to soda or bead blast the fins first. Most of the flat areas you can do by hand but you might want have blasted with the cylinder. But im guessing you have the prep dialed.
How important is it to “bake’ the engine paint on? (either warm up the motor or actualy bake the part?)
And what is the time frame between painting and “baking” the paint? Is there a window where you have to have that completed by? If so, what happens if you wait longer?
I looked on the VHT site and didn't see anything.
The best results I've had is using Duplicolor for the engine and VHT brand for the exhaust. Duplicolor engine paint looks great and is very durable but their ultra high heat exhaust paint leaves a lot to be desired. I have before and after pics of using duplicolor on the exhaust then a re-do using VHT. What a difference! Just my .02
